The 2022 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Trevor Penning 2022 NFL Draft Profile.
Trevor Penning Background
Position:Â Offensive Tackle
Size:Â 6-foot-7, 330 pounds
Class:Â Redshirt Senior
2021 stats:Â FCS First Team All-American
Penning really grew into himself at the FCS level, starting as a reserve and then working his way up to an All-American. He is now an NFL Draft prospect.
He wasn’t ranked by some scouting services as a high school prospect and chose to go to Northern Iowa at the FCS level. After redshirting in 2017, he saw limited action in the 2018 season. Penning stepped into the starting lineup in 2019 and performed well. The Panthers were able to make it to the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs that season. Due to COVID, the FCS played in the spring of 2021 on a limited schedule. Penning played both left and right tackle, but Northern Iowa went just 3-3 in their abbreviated schedule. For his play during the fall 2021 season, Penning was named an All-American at left tackle. His play was good on an individual basis, but the Panthers finished the 2021 fall season at 6-6.
Following the 2021 season, Penning has been a highly regarded draft prospect. He is currently projected to be a first or second-round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Penning has good size for an NFL offensive tackle at 6-foot-7 and 330 pounds. With his good size comes great length. His prototypical size and length will help him adjust and deal with NFL-level athletes. With long arms, he can keep defenders at bay and control the matchup with the right leverage. His size also gives him great strength.
His demeanor is great for an offensive lineman, as he plays angry. He has good power and loves to finish plays through the whistle. In the run game he can move defenders well out of the way and then makes sure they stay out of the play.
Immediately, Penning will be a better run blocker than a pass blocker. He can use his great strength to move defenders out of the way. The run blocking will allow him to use that nasty demeanor to impose his will on a defense. He can get to the second level to help spring big runs.
Trevor Penning Weaknesses
Penning often gets off balance too often when blocking, which includes him ending up on the ground somewhat frequently. He needs to keep his pad level low, which is harder given his size. There are times when he lunges to try to make up space, but ends up on the ground.
His lateral movement skills leave a lot to be desired. When trying to react quickly, he can often be a step late or he will lunge to make up for it and then get off balance. Edge rushers that can bend and change directions (or do inside-out moves) could give him some trouble.
When playing against premier competition, Penning has struggled. That goes for playing against FBS programs at the college level and at the Senior Bowl. He needs to adjust to the speed of the game quickly and may take more time to develop because he isn’t as used to it as other prospects.
Projected Draft Range:Â First Round Pick-Second Round Pick
