Way Too Early 2025 College Football Top 25

Publish Date: January 20, 2025

The college football season still isn’t quite over, but next year still can’t come soon enough. With that, here is the way too early 2025 college football top 25.

25-21

25. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Brent Key has put together two-straight seven win seasons. Quarterback Haynes King and running back Jamal Haynes will both be returning to help the offense be even more effective next season.

24. Baylor Bears

Dave Aranda has turned things around again after leading Baylor to an eight win season. Baylor found a good quarterback in Sawyer Robertson.

23. Nebraska Cornhuskers

Dylan Raiola had a decent freshman season and a big jump is expected in year two. The Cornhuskers have hit the portal hard to get him some more help including Kentucky wide receiver Dane Key and Cal wide receiver Nyziah Hunter.

22. Iowa Hawkeyes

Iowa will lose some important players to the NFL, but the defense should be solid again. Bringing in South Dakota State quarterback Mark Gronowski will help an offense that needs improvement.

21. Indiana Hoosiers

Fernando Mendoza enters from Cal to play quarterback for the Hoosiers. Coach Cignetti did a great job in year one and even with a tougher schedule in year two, he could be in line for a solid year.

20-16

20. Texas A&M Aggies

Texas A&M has plenty of talent and could finish higher, but they need Marcel Reed to develop more as a passer. Mike Elko’s defense will win them some SEC games next season.

19. Ole Miss Rebels

The Rebels will lose a lot of players, but they are getting a lot of players via the transfer portal again. There are still some positions to be figured out, but Lane Kiffin could solve the issue by the start of the season.

18. Illinois Fighting Illini

Bret Bielema won nine games in the regular season, then defeated South Carolina in their bowl game. Luke Altmyer is back at quarterback and the Illini bring back enough around him to have another good season.

17. Michigan Wolverines

Michigan finished their season strong with wins over Ohio State and then Alabama in the bowl game. They have some good young talent and have hit the transfer portal and the high school ranks to try to improve the quarterback position.

16. Florida Gators

Florida will rank highly in the 247 talent composite and after fighting through at tough schedule, could have a better season in 2025. D.J. Lagway developing could really help Florida take an even bigger jump.

15-11

15. Iowa State Cyclones

Iowa State will lose their best receivers, but Rocco Becht continues to get better at quarterback. Matt Campbell has built things back up these last two years and could be a threat for the CFP next season.

14. Kansas State Wildcats

Avery Johnson maybe didn’t live up to the hype in 2024, but he played decently. If he improves, Chris Klieman could be competing for the Big 12 Championship.

13. Alabama Crimson Tide

Jalen Milroe leaving will leave a void at quarterback. Kaln DeBoer will get a quarterback that he chose though, who may be able to run his offense better. With Deonte Lawson back on defense, the Crimson Tide should be in the mix.

12. SMU Mustangs

SMU did well in year one of their ACC tenure. Kevin Jennings is back at quarterback and the Mustangs have hit the tanser portal to help him out once again.

11. Arizona State Sun Devils

Kenny Dillingham turned things around at Arizona State quickly. Sam Leavitt is returning, although replacing Cam Skattebo will be tough.

10-6

10. LSU Tigers

LSU has a lot going for them in 2025. Garrett Nussmeier is returning at quarterback and they have the top ranked transfer portal class. With the wide receivers coming in, the offensive can be eplosive. Defensively they should be improved.

9. Tennessee Volunteers

Losing James Pearce and Dylan Sampson will leave holes on both defense and offense. Tennessee is counting on Nico Iamaleava to improve and for Josh Heupel to help him in doing so. They have talent around him and could make a second-straight playoff in 2025.

8. South Carolina Gamecocks

Shane Beamer did a great job this season and returns LaNorris Sellers at quarterback. They’ll need to replace a lot on defense, but having Dylan Stewart back rushing the passer should help them come along.

7. Clemson Tigers

Clemson returns most of their starters from last season and Dabo Swinney is using the transfer portal more. Most importantly Cade Klubnik played well in 2024 and is returning for 2025 with a chance to take the program to another level.

6. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Notre Dame will lose plenty from their top-notch defense and Riley Leonard at quarterback. There are still talented players on both sides of the ball, including safety Adon Schuler and running back Jeremiyah Love. Figuring out which quarterback on the roster (they’ve said they won’t get one in the portal) will lead the team next season is the biggest x-factor for this team next season.

5-1

5. Penn State Nittany Lions

Penn State received a boost when Drew Allar mentioned he planned on returning to school. He wil have to find new offensive weapons to utilize, but the Nittany Lions are bringing in some talented ones from the portal.

4. Oregon Ducks

Dan Lanning has things rolling in Eugene. They’ll need to replace a lot of players, but they have recruited and used the transfer portal well. While they likely won’t be national championship favorites, they won’t be too far behind.

3. Georgia Bulldogs

Georgia struggled to create big plays on offense this season, but have tried to address that by getting receivers in the portal. With Zachariah Branch and Noah Thomas in, Gunnar Stockton can have a good first season as a starter.

2. Texas Longhorns

Arch Manning figures to make his much-anticipated season-opening start next year. The offense still will have playmakers, but even more importantly, Texas has some good talent defensively. Linebacker Anthony Hill will be one of the best players in the country next season.

1. Ohio State Buckeyes

Ohio State has to replace a lot from their team. Julian Sayin is likely to start at quarterback. He’ll have the most loaded wide receiver room in the country to help him improve. Defensively, Caleb Downs is back to lead a bunch of new faces, which will prevent a severe drop off on that side of the ball.
