Kyler Murray has options. The 23-year-old is a wanted man and when it comes to a determined young man who can do it all, then frankly there aren’t many who can hold a candle to the much sought-after superstar in the making.
There was a time when commentators berated Murray for a supposed lack of commitment to the game, which is something of a stretch given we are talking about a Heisman Trophy winner. It just so happened that as well as being a superb quarterback he also happened to have prodigious talent in another sport, baseball.
Growing speculation on the subject of Murray’s future includes the possibility of an MLB career, indeed MLB predictions today might suggest that in the long-term Kyler might be better off seeking to make an impact in the sport. Indeed betting odds are frequently cited on the chances of Murray somehow taking part in NFL AND MLB, though that might be something of a stretch.
In 2018 Murray was drafted to the Oakland Athletics, indeed he was all set-up to join spring training before he won that aforementioned Heisman and now it appears another sporting discipline has been added to his many list of talents.
Murray considers himself a three-sport star, the third of which being his esports career, which is another that could lead him to greatness.
If anyone was in any doubt where the Texan places his eSports aspirations into his overall gameplan, then let’s be clear, Murray sees it as very much on a par with any NFL and MLB plans, stating;
“I still hold on to the three-sport title,” Murray stated, “If the time came where I got to do what I wanted to do, which, I don’t know, but I’m leaving it open. I think I can still play [baseball] for sure, but we’ll add the gaming on to that. Don’t shortchange me, please.”
In order to illustrate his commitment to esports, and indeed his value to the rapidly-growing phenomenon, Murray was snapped up by Los Angeles based esports organization FaZe Clan.
Though the move is ostensibly a marketing move it’s also clear that Murray has an abundance of talent when it comes to video gaming, and the move to join FaZe suits all parties a great deal.
Speaking of the move Murray couldn’t have been more excited, stating enthusiastically;
“I’ve played video games my whole life. To be drafted by FaZe and welcomed into the family is a blessing and an honour, and honestly one of the most exciting moments of my life and career so far. I am looking forward to this next chapter and representing FaZe at the highest level.”
That enthusiasm and excitement was matched by founder of the FaZe clan, Richard Bengston, who was quick to praise Murray for his involvement and love of the esports world.
“We’re so stoked to officially welcome Kyler to the FaZe family. Aside from being one of the best quarterbacks out there, he is embedded in the gaming community racking up hours upon hours playing and streaming.”
“The friendship with Kyler, myself, and all the FaZe members is natural and organic. He’s a perfect fit for FaZe as we continue to lead the cultural collision of traditional sports and gaming.” And on that point Bengston has perhaps hit on an aspect that could become something of a stumbling block for Murray.
Sadly though esports, as a cultural movement and a sporting cornerstone, is still not given the respect it deserves, especially among those soaked in the century plus of history that exists in the likes of American Football and Baseball, and this clash of sporting civilizations may end up having a negative effect on Murray’s ability to play on multiple fronts.
