Wallace played a few different roles for Kentucky in his one season with the team. He is now in the 2023 NBA draft.
Out of high school, Wallace was a five-star recruit out of Texas who signed with Kentucky. In his one season with the team, he averaged 11.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game. He helped the Wildcats get to the NCAA Tournament and win a game while there.
Following the NCAA Tournament appearance, Wallace declared for the 2023 NBA Draft. He is currently projected to be a lottery pick.
Cason Wallace Strengths
For plenty of different reasons, Wallace was a good defender at Kentucky. He has good foot speed to stay in front of opponents. His wingspan is 6-foot-8 and can help him defend much bigger players. Wallace can stay locked on for a long time and make shots tough. When he is playing off-ball, he has great awareness to jump passing lanes and get steals. What is unique for a guard, especially of his size, is that he actually had a few chase-down blocks on defense as well along with some blocks as a weakside helper.
His versatility on offense might be a nice selling point. He had stretches where he played off-ball and others where he played point guard due to his skillset and injuries. That versatility means that he can generate offense for himself and others. He also is experienced at catching and shooting. With the success of other former Kentucky guards who had similar abilities to play off and on ball in the league (Immanuel Quickley and Tyrese Maxey), Wallace’s stock may be elevated a little bit.
Wallace has the ability to score from all three levels of the floor. He can catch and shoot from deep, while also being ok at pulling up from that distance as well. Wallace had some success in the mid-range with jumpers and floaters. He also can finish decently at the basket, which his speed and athleticism aid him with.
Cason Wallace Weaknesses
Wallace can improve his shooting off the dribble. While he did ok at that in college, he was better shooting off the catch. Generating more space to free himself could help his shooting percentages off the dribble. His worst shooting zone last season was from the top of the key, which is where a lot of his pull-up jumpers were from.
There were times when Wallace could’ve been more aggressive in college. He needs to continually hunt for his own shot to be a threat. When he was aggressive, he was able to get to the basket and get open looks.
At Kentucky, Wallace had back and lower leg injuries. This may have stunted his effectiveness. It looks like there is more potential to be unlocked when he is healthy, but he will have to stay on the floor at the NBA level. He played through injuries in college, but missed some time as well.
