Madden 19: Most overrated AFC players

Publish Date: August 7, 2018

Over the last few weeks, our staff has compiled a lot of posts covering questionable Madden 19 ratings. Every team has been covered, but who were the players that Madden was the most incorrect on? This post will cover the most overrated AFC players with excerpts from our articles covering specific teams.

William Hayes, DE, Miami Dolphins

Cameron Wake is an 89 this year and while that might be a tad low, generally speaking, that isn’t too bad. But his backup is an 87.

William Hayes gets a good amount of pressure in the backfield there is no doubt about that. Yet, he has never recorded more than 5.5 sacks in one season, he did not start a single game last year and he only had one sack overall last season. There is no way that Hayes should be ranked above names like Akiem Hicks, Adrian Clayborn, Carlos Dunlap, Leonard Williams, Muhammad Wilkerson, Derek Wolfe and Vic Beasley Jr. Yes, that is a lot of names, but it must be emphasized that Hayes, as a backup, is ranked higher than every one of those players.

William Hays should be rated closer to a 75 if for no other reason than he played in 10 games overall, started none, and only had one sack last year when he did play. -Robert Hanes

Tyrann Mathieu, S, Houston Texans

Madden rated Mathieu as the third best free safety in the league, at 93 overall. This is way too high for a player who last made the Pro-Bowl in 2015 and has struggled with injury issues otherwise. Last year, even though he played all 16 games, Mathieu still didn’t produce like a top five, much less top three safety. Players like Devin McCourty, who has proven to be a consistent star, and Kevin Byard, who is coming off an All-Pro selection, should be ahead of him.

Madden can give the Honey Badger, as people call him, a bit of a boost because of what he is capable of. However, there is a reason he had to bet on himself and take a one-year, 7-million dollar deal from the Texans. Mathieu has to prove that he can produce again like he did in 2015, and should be rated accordingly.- Pranay Malempati

Tyler Eifert, TE, Cincinnati Bengals

When healthy Eifert is easily a top three TE in the league. That being said, he hasn’t been healthy in years and it should have a bigger effect on his ratings. Only one time in his entire career has he started at least 15 games. In his rookie year of 2013 he played 15 games. The following years were: 2014 one game, 2015 13 games, 2016 eight games and last year two games. That doesn’t scream an 89 on Madden.

There is not a whole lot else to say about Eifert. He is a big target and a big if. If he has a great year this year and can stay healthy and maybe play all 16 games this season then he will be worthy of his 89 rating. That being said, he already is missing come of camp due to some injury which does not bode well for his status this season.

Eifert needs to be rated more closely to an 84 or 85 than an 89.- Robert Hanes

Danny Amendola, WR, Miami Dolphins

With Julian Edelman out last year Amendola had to shoulder a lot of the load for the Patriots and he did a pretty good job overall. He was finally healthy and finished with 659 yards and 2 touchdowns. While that is good it is not 85 overall good.

To start, his new teammate Kenny Stills had Jay Cutler throwing to him for most of the season, had Jarvis Landry having a career year, and he still had a much better year than Amendola and is rated below him. For reference, Stills had 847 yards and 6 touchdowns. Amendola is constantly hurt and when on the field he is still just a solid option for quick routes. He does not spread the field and his job requires him to go across the field constantly, thus leaving the possibility of him getting hurt again.

Amendola will be a nice addition to this offense. He will bring consistency but, he is not an 85 overall. A better rating for him would be closer to an 80.- Robert Hanes

Eric Berry, S, Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs Madden 19 ratings are mostly underrated. Sadly, that does not apply to Eric Berry. He’s had two serious injuries that have caused him to miss time and a devastating bout with leukemia. His most recent injury, the Achilles tear, is the most damning. It’s hard to imagine that even with his unyielding will, that Berry will return to be just as good. I’m not saying he’s washed up, but it’s not realistic to project that Berry will open the season as the second-best safety in the NFL.- Braxton Angle
