Tennessee Titans: 5 Things Learned From Week 1

1. Cairo Santos Will Suffice

Five days before the season opener the Titans were forced to place kicker Ryan Succop on IR. Succop managed 26-30 in field goals last season, including 3-4 from 50+ yards. Succop is a lifetime 83.6% and at 32 is one of the reliable veteran kickers in the NFL.

Brazilian kicker Cairo Santos came as the replacement and has quickly proven he’s capable of the job. Santos made field goals from 37 yards and 53 yards Sunday while kicking perfectly in PAT’s on the day.

2. Delanie Walker Was Missed

Any doubt that Delanie Walker wouldn’t be able to return from last year’s season-ending injury was put to rest Sunday. The 35-year-old veteran caught five passes for 55 yards as well as two touchdowns from Mariota.

Walker continues to go against the odds when it comes to his growing age. Since his age 26 season the Central Missouri State graduate has propelled into an excellent career. In fact, once he turned 30 he’s seen the most successful years in his career.

Minus last year he’s gone for 3,585 yards and 20 TD’s in his 30’s. The timeless veteran looks to improve on these numbers once again after his dominant performance against Cleveland.

3. Titans Achieve the Impossible: Make a Browns Fan Waste His Beer

Malcolm Butler caught Baker Mayfield’s second touchdown pass of the day – not something Browns fans were too happy about.

A pick-six late in the fourth quarter of a blowout was apparently too much for one Cleveland Browns fan. As the Titans defense jumped the wall in the Dawg Pound to celebrate with some Titans fans, a home fan wearing a Baker Mayfield jersey decided to dispel the opposing players with his beverage.

Cornerback Logan Ryan got a face full of what is assumed to be Budlight. The Browns have since indefinitely banned the unnamed man from the stadium and released a statement on the matter.

4. Brown Embarrasses the Browns

Remember when Jarvis Landry joined the Browns? How about when Odell Beckham Jr. joined them? Safe to bet it wasn’t Ole Miss rookie A.J. Brown who would be stealing the spotlight in the opener.

Brown was the first rookie in Titans history to record 100 yards in their first game since Sid Banks did it in 1964. He also led the Titans in receiving yards in week 1 – earning most of those yards on his own after the catch. He’s making an early case to be the go to receiver for Mariota moving forward.

5. Titans Defense is Adequate

There was plenty of excitement for the Cleveland Browns offense coming into this season. The Browns still managed more total yards and had a better red zone percentage.

The biggest issue came on turnovers as well as penalties. The Titans defense pressured the Browns when it mattered. They also were able to play a cleaner game that resulted in over 100 yards difference in penalty yardage.

The final and most important stat came from the Titans forced turnovers. The former Heisman Trophy winner wasn’t able to keep his offense on the field as he threw three interceptions during the blowout.
