Here’s a quick look back at the Cleveland Cavaliers 2023 Media Day.
Donovan Mitchell contract extension
Donovan Mitchell has been vocal about his intent not to sign an extension with the Cavs this year. His contract lasts until the 2025-26 season, and he has an option to pick up another year for a total of $37 million. Is this reason to worry? To put it simply: no. Mitchell is still under contract for the next two seasons and stated that the possibility for him resigning as soon as next year is on the table. His focus now is to compete at the highest level and to help this team achieve as much as possible.
Koby Altman comments
Altman stated his obvious regret for his recent OVI arrest. Although he wasn’t able to discuss much in detail (due to it being a legal matter) he mentioned that he’s talked to a multitude of staff members in order to express this sentiment. The ramifications Altman will face both legally and professionally remain uncertain.
Mobley gains weight
Evan Mobley discussed how he worked on his body this off-season, and that he was able to put on seven pounds of muscle. This could lead to a massive improvement in Mobley’s game, especially if he continues to put on muscle. Finishing on the first All-NBA Defensive team last season, Mobley’s defensive prowess is already on display in his current slender build. Former Cav and new teammate Tristan Thompson compares Mobley to the likes of Anthony Davis. If he can continue to put on weight, the sky’s the limit for his defensive presence.
Ricky Rubio steps away
The Cavaliers made the following statement regarding Ricky Rubio:
“Cleveland Cavaliers guard Ricky Rubio publicly stated in August that he was stepping away from basketball to focus on his mental health. We remain fully supportive of Ricky and his efforts which for now are best continued away from the team and have excused his absence from camp. We remain in regular communication and consultation with Ricky and will continue to assist him in any way possible. Out of respect for his privacy we will not have any further comment or be able to answer any questions. The Cavaliers organization wishes Ricky and his family well.”
Although the organization remains hopeful that Rubio will return this season, how long he will be out remains indefinite.
Other notes
Caris LeVert compared how this off-season was different from last, and revealed that he was recovering from shoulder surgery last summer. This means he wasn’t able to fully train the entire summer, as he was this year. He feels confident going into the season.
Tristan Thompson unveiled his New Jersey number (12) and Koby Altman discussed the importance of his role. He hopes Thompson can bring some energy to this team as, though they are both skilled and confident, they are a relatively quiet bunch.
Jarrett Allen discussed how last season ended and how their success will be defined going forward. They accomplished the tasks of rebuilding, improving, and making the playoffs. First through the play-in tournament, then through their regular season record. The bar has been set at the playoffs, and their success going forward will be based upon the quality postseason performance.
The Cleveland Cavaliers play their first regular season game against the Brooklyn Nets on October 25 at 7:30 PM.
