G2 Esports announced their acquisition of Reed ‘Chicago’ Wilen. Chicago will replace former G2 captain and founding member Cameron ‘Kronovi’ Bills who will land with Rogue Esports, per the teams’ official websites.
Chicago played his first season in the Rocket League Championship Series in season six with Evil Geniuses. EG has not announced Chicago’s replacement yet.
What the move means for G2:
G2 had consecutive disappointing performances at the last two postseason LANs, finishing 8th in season five and 9th in season six. Those performances left the squad in a weird limbo where they were good enough to finish at the top of the table during the NA regular season, but didn’t have the talent to place high at LAN.
Chicago is the perfect player to pull G2 out of that limbo. Chicago was a top five quality player in NA last season and proved his worth at LANVegas. He had nutty moments galore. Chicago lead EG in goals per game as well as score per game. He might just be the perfect striker to spark G2 to next level.
“G2 Esports is an iconic organization in Rocket League’s history, so being able to join it alongside Rizzo and JKnaps is a dream come true for me and I can’t wait to see what the future holds,” Chicago said.
Kronovi was G2. He was the captain of the team and Rocket League’s first star. He provided great leadership for an often inconsistent squad. The hole he leaves behind is humongous.
What the move means for Rogue:
Rogue was relegated to the Rival Series at the end of season six, and elected to purchase the FlyQuest roster that included Austin ‘AyyJayy’ Aebi, Nicholas ‘Wonder’ Blackerby and Ronin ‘PrimeThunder’ D’Auria who has since left the team. Krovoni slots in pretty nicely to the goal scoring role that PrimeThunder left behind.
Kronovi quietly had an excellent season six. Kronovi finished fourth in NA with .87 goals per game and had 60% goal participation. He scored some nice goals at LAN during Day One, and he’s just the consummate pro. He’ll also bring his large fan base to Rogue with him.
Last season FlyQuest was the worst defensive team in NA and Kronovi (1.43 saves per game) is a huge defensive upgrade over PrimeThunder (1.11 saves per game, worst in NA). Wonder is one of the best distributors in the league and should be a great counterpart to Kronovi’s goal scoring capabilities. Kro can also settle into the third man role and focus on making defensive stops. This is a nice upgrade for Rogue in almost every way you look at it.
Emiliano ‘Sizz’ Benny will stay with Rogue as a substitute.
What about Evil Geniuses?
Chicago made EG part of Rocket League’s elite teams. He’s one of the game’s rising stars and replacing him will be tough.
PrimeThunder could be an option and would complete the three team trade. PrimeThunder put FlyQuest on his back during the season five Promotion/Relegation tournament and led FlyQuest to the best finish ever for an RLRS promoted squad.
His high-flying goal scoring style could compliment the defensive grit of Jason ‘Klassux’ Klass and the ever present EG captain Gabriel ‘CorruptedG’ Vallozzi.
If rumors prove true and Chiefs EFC star Matthew ‘Drippay’ Den-Kaat is available, then he’s EG’s best option. Drippay is arguably one of the five best players in the world and is maybe even better than Kronovi or Chicago.
EG has stated that Chicago’s vacancy “will be filled by a new acquisition that we’re in the process of finalizing.”
