The quarterback situation in Philadelphia is getting even more interesting with the reports coming out that the Eagles might be interested in trading for Marcus Mariota. The Eagles have been in need of another quarterback since they decided to trade Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts. That was probably the best decision moving forward for the Eagles. The question now is if Marcus Mariota is a good fit for Philadelphia. This article will answer that question and more.
Mariota’s career so far
Mariota has spent most of his career with the Tennessee Titans. The Titans drafted Mariota with the second overall pick in the 2015 draft. He played 12 games his rookie year and passed for 2,818 yards and 19 touchdowns. Mariota did have 10 interceptions that year. This is not the best rookie season ever, but it showed promise for Tennessee. His numbers got even better in 2016 where he surpassed 3,000 passing yards along with 26 touchdowns. His touchdown to interception ratio improved greatly that year. Mariota started struggling the next couple of years with the Titans. He struggled in 2017 passing for only 13 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. Ryan Tannehill ended up replacing Mariota in the 2019 season. With Tannehill replacing him, Mariota decided to sign with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2020.
Would Mariota be a good fit for the Eagles
Mariota is a veteran in the NFL and has gained a lot of experience since coming into the NFL in 2015. This would only benefit Jalen Hurts who is still young and going into his second year. Mariota would be able to mentor Hurts and craft him to be the Eagles next starter. Mariota also has a lot of mobility and speed which allows him get out of sticky situations when the offensive line breaks down. The former Heismen winner did rush for 349 yards in 2016 and 312 in 2017. He would be a great quarterback to run the run-pass option with his speed and ability to throw the ball. He provides the same threat to defenses as Hurts does, which could be a good thing for the Eagles to have on their team
There are a couple worries about Mariota. Firstly, Mariota has not not been a full time starting quarterback in a while. This is certainly something the Eagles should think about. Mariota really has not had a stellar season since 2016, which is worrisome. He also had problems with interceptions thoughout his career. As said earlier in the article, he threw 15 interceptions in 2017 which was a career high for him in a season. He had a fair amount of interceptions thoughout his NFL career, which could spell trouble for the Eagles. Turnovers have been a big problem for the Eagles recently with Wentz throwing a ton during his time in Philly.
What should the Eagles do?
The Eagles have many options. They can either trade for an experienced quarterback, test the free agent market or draft a quarterback. There are not really that many viable quarterbacks in free agency so it would not be likely that the Eagles would turn there. There are some great quarterbacks in the upcoming draft such as Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson and Justin Fields. Any of those quarterbacks have the ability to have success in the NFL. Having an experienced quarterback could help the Eagles win faster and it could help the chemistry of the team with having a veteran on the team. So, should the Eagles trade for Mariota? It would benefit the the Eagles having a veteran presence on the team that can be around the two other young quarterbacks. Mariota has proven that he can be a good NFL quarterback. This may not be a long term option, but getting Mariota can definitely add some good to the team.
