Sanders was a four-star recruit, who chose to follow his dad, Deion, to Jackson State to start his college career. He played the 2021 and 2022 seasons at Jackson State winning Freshman of the Year and a SWAC Player of the Year award on the way. In 2023, he left for Colorado when Deion took that job. Sanders passed for 3,230 yards, 27 touchdowns and three interceptions on 69.3 percent completion. His play helped Colorado get to four wins after notching just one the year before. For the 2024 season, Sanders passed for 4,134 yards, 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions on 74 percent completion. He led the Buffalos to a 9-4 overall record.
Sanders finished up his college career in the Pop-Tarts Bowl and declared for the 2025 NFL Draft.
Shedeur Sanders Strengths
Sanders has been an accurate and efficient passer during his college career, specifically to the short and intermediate areas of the field. He completed 74 percent of his passes this season and that shows up on tape. On short throws, he puts the ball in space to let receivers run after the catch. He can throw receivers open to the middle areas of the field and fit the ball in between zones well.
His football IQ and decision-making are both impressive. Sanders doesn’t turn the ball over very much, throwing just 13 interceptions over the last two seasons. He makes good pre-snap reads, which helps, but he also sees the field pretty clearly post-snap.
When the play breaks down, Sanders is able to make plays out of structure. He can escape pressure and an encouraging sign is he keeps his eyes downfield to find open receivers for big plays. Sanders is accurate on the run, helping his ability. He is a solid athlete who can pick up key first downs with his legs when plays break down.
Shedeur Sanders Weaknesses
Sanders has just average arm strength, which can limit him. His deep balls come in with inconsistent accuracy. He has a strong enough arm to fit the ball into some tight windows, but it will fall below many other NFL quarterbacks who can make throws in tighter windows. His game fits more with a passing game that attacks the short and intermediate areas of the field.
While he can escape pressure, Sanders also holds on to the ball too long and takes too many sacks. His out of structure plays can net big gains, but there are other times where he loses yardage because he is trying to make a play. Finding the fine line of when he can extend plays and when to get rid of the football will be crucial for his development.
While Sanders is listed at 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds, it is likely we will measure in shorter than that at the NFL Combine. This is below the prototypical size for an NFL quarterback. He plays well, but concerns about injuries (even though he was healthy through college) and being able to get the ball over the line of scrimmage may come up.
