Chargers safety Derwin James is getting a massive new contract extension. James and the Chargers have agreed to a four-year extension worth $76.4 million total, which will have an average payout of $19.1 million per year. The deal has a record breaking $42 million guaranteed to James.
The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the news via Twitter on Wednesday.
James was the 17th overall selection of the 2018 NFL Draft out of Florida State. He was taken by the Los Angeles Chargers, for whom he has played his entire career. He’s earned two First Team All-Pro selections, along with two Pro Bowl nods.
In four seasons, James has missed 29 total games due to various injuries. He missed just two games in 2021, earning 118 combined tackles (75 solo tackles), two sacks and two interceptions. His only other interceptions came in his rookie season, in which he had three.
