The 2024 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Quinyon Mitchell 2024 NFL Draft Profile.
Quinyon Mitchell Background
Position: Cornerback
School:Â Toledo
Size:Â 6-foot, 195 pounds
Class: Senior
2023 stats:Â 41 total tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 1 interception, 18 passes defended
Mitchell has been great for Toledo for his whole career, but specifically been a star for the last few years. Now he is in the 2024 NFL Draft.
As a three-star recruit in the class of 2020, Mitchell signed with Toledo out of Florida. He played in just six games as a freshman, getting his feet wet for a larger role down the line. As a sophomore in 2021, Mitchell stepped into the starting lineup, registering 34 total tackles and eight passes defended. He helped the Rockets win seven games that season. In 2022, Mitchell really broke out with 41 total tackles, five interceptions and 19 passes defended. He led the Rockets to a 9-5 season. Mitchell opted to return for the 2023 season, totaling 41 tackles, one interception and 18 passes defended.
Following the 2023 season, Mitchell declared for the 2024 NFL Draft. He is currently projected to be a first-round pick.
Quinyon Mitchell Strengths
Mitchell is a solid athlete on tape and proved it in a different way by testing well at the combine. He has good quickness, speed, agility and jumping ability. His ability to start off a rep with quickness helps him when he is in off-coverage. Change of direction helps him in coverage, as does his long speed, which prevents him from getting beat deep.
His ability to matchup in man-to-man coverage is among the best in the class. He uses his athleticism to mirror receivers well. His fluid hips help him change direction quickly. Receivers struggled to create separation against Mitchell and he was able to be left on an island in man-to-man coverage.
He has unique ball skills that also help set him apart. Mitchell can break on the ball quickly when it leaves the quarterback’s hands. He attacks the catchpoint well, high-pointing the football. His aggressiveness helps him come away with a pass defended or interception on most plays he is in position.
Quinyon Mitchell Weaknesses
Mitchell has plenty of experience in both off-man coverage and zone coverage, but didn’t show much in press-man coverage. He has the tools to play it more in the NFL, but hasn’t shown it. At the Senior Bowl he got some good reps in, but teams who want to press may prefer someone other than Mitchell.
His route-recognition can improve. Mitchell can get beat by double moves when he is overeager. He does a good job mirroring receivers, but he can lose receivers in zone coverage. Mitchell can have better eye balance to help with that, but better route recognition will help as well.
In college, Mitchell had a few games against top-end competition, but for the most part that wasn’t the case. He dominated the competition, but moving up to the NFL where the game is played at a different speed may give him some issues out of the gate while he adjusts.
