Mims created a lot of big plays for the Sooners over his three seasons at Oklahoma. Now he is a 2023 NFL Draft prospect.
As a four-star recruit out of Texas, Mims signed on with Oklahoma in the class of 2020. He immediately started contributing as a true freshman, as he had 37 receptions for 610 yards and nine touchdowns. His presence helped the Sooners go 9-2. The following season, Mims had 32 receptions for 705 yards and five touchdowns. Mims led the Sooners to an 11-2 record and a win in the Alamo Bowl. For the 2022 season, Mims hauled in 54 passes for 1,083 yards and six touchdowns. The Sooners went 6-7 on the season.
Following his appearance in the Cheez-It Bowl, Mims declared for the 2023 NFL Draft. He is a projected mid-round pick.
Marvin Mims Strengths
Mims is a big play waiting to happen. His ability to be a deep threat was shown with his 20.1 yards per catch average in 2022. He has good speed and can separate vertically down the field. Mims has good ball tracking and can run right under deep passes.
He is a good athlete in several different ways. Mims has good quickness to start the play. He shows good agility throughout a play. Mims has the long speed to keep defenses on their toes. His athleticism is what helps him win.
His ability to create big plays isn’t limited to deep passes, as Mims is electric with the ball in his hands. He uses his good athleticism to pick up yards after the catch. Mims has good vision in the open field and the elusivity to make defenders miss. He has experience as a returner which should help his value.
Marvin Mims Weaknesses
Mims has a smaller frame for a wide receiver. He is 5-foot-11 and 183 pounds. Mims will need to add strength to his frame to help him as a blocker and to battle physical coverage. His limited size also gives him a smaller catch radius.
His route-running needs to be more detailed. Mims has the athleticism to be a much better route-runner than he currently shows. He needs to get in and out of his breaks quicker. Mims can also not give up on routes. He has the ability to create separation underneath and not just vertically, but he needs to show it more consistently.
He can work on his hands a little more as well. Mims already has a limited catch radius, but he also has trouble making contested catches. Add in a few focus drops and Mims needs to show stronger and more consistent hands to be a more trusted target.
Projected Draft Range: Third Round Pick-Fifth Round Pick
Draft Grade: Third-Round Pick
