The Miami Marlins finally found a trade to their liking as they sent catcher J.T. Realmuto to the Phillies. In return, the Marlins received the Phillies’ top prospect Sixto Sanchez, as well as prospect Will Stewart, catcher Jorge Alfaro and an international bonus slot. Realmuto is the top catcher in baseball and is coming off a career year. Last season he had a slash line of .277/.340/.484, as well as 21 home runs, 74 RBI and a WAR of 4.3.
Sixto Sanchez is only 20 years old and ranked 27th on MLB Pipeline’s top 100 prospects. Last year in 46.2 innings in the minors, Sixto went 4-3 with a 2.51 ERA, 45 strikeouts, and held opponents to a .224 average. Alfaro is Realmuto’s replacement and had a solid rookie season with the Phillies. Last season Alfaro had a slash line of .262/.324/.407, with 10 home runs, and 37 RBI. He needs to work on his defense as he allowed 10 passed balls as well as 59 stolen bases. At the same time, he threw out 21 runners which ranked him third amongst NL catchers.
The Phillies are in win-now mode and are hoping by trading for Realmuto, either Manny Machado or Bryce Harper will become more inclined to sign with the team.
