Sixth seed Dignitas lost their LCS 2021 Championship Upper Bracket series against third seed Evil Geniuses on Saturday 3-1.
Going into the matchup, Dignitas were the heavy underdogs due to the fact that their summer split was quite disappointing compared to their spring and Evil Geniuses being the hottest team in the LCS right now, closing out their season on a 14-3 run.
Game One
In game one of the series, Evil Geniuses dominated from start to finish. Dignistas went for a “wombo combo” composition which never got to utilize because of the leads Evil Geniuses established in the early keep. With their team, DIG should have played it safe early and just waited for the later portions of the game but they didn’t, instead forcing fights early.
DIG’s only advantage over EG was their Bot Lane and both teams were aware of that. Less than 10 minutes in, there was a five vs five fight in the Bot Lane which EG walked away from with two kills. This fight started by Zaqueri “Aphromoo” Black trying to force a fight with Matthew “Akaadian” Higginbotham ganking. With DIG’s Bot Lane now behind it allowed for EG to easily take over the game which is what they did.
Game Two
In game two of the series, Dignitas managed to put on an impressive performance using a skirmisher based team composition instead of the unsuccessful “wombo combo.” DIG managed to get pretty ahead in the early game thanks to the early ganking of Akaadian and the strength of Bot Lane, being up eight to three in kills at one point. With this lead, DIG Mid Laner David “Yusui” Bloomquist thought the team was stronger than they actually were as he would overextended in a fight, allowing EG to win it and continue coming back. EG would then get six unanswered kills putting them very much in the lead.
The game looked all but over for DIG until a phenomenal play by Aphrhmoo on Rakan where he engaged on EG as they were attempting to do Baron. This play allowed for DIG to instead secure the Baron and take back control of the game.
Game Three
Going into game three tied, Dignitas began to feel a little bit more comfortable as they pulled out an orthodox pick in Kindred Mid. A few weeks back when Yusui played Kindred Mid it looked amazing. It was able to live in the enemy’s jungle with Akaadian without being punished at all. This time, against the 1st LCS All-Pro Team Mid Laner Daniele “Jiizuke” di Mauro, the pick looked terrible. The lane was going fine for Yusui until he made another crucial overextending mistake. In a three vs three battle Mid Lane, it appeared as if nobody from either team would die. That was until Yusui on Kindred jumped into Jiizuke’s Lucian ult without having his ult himself. This allowed for Jiizuke to get a lead on Kindred which he would use to snowball the game out of control for the EG win.
Game Four
In the final game of the series, Dignitas saw the same mistakes from earlier games in the series. Bot Lane couldn’t really get going as Akaadian spent time ganking Top instead, the team forced fights early again and Jiizuke was allowed a free lane again as he could easily farm as Lucian against Yasuo. DIG had some moments which could have turned into potential comebacks but ultimately did not.
Evil Geniuses will advance and take on number three seed 100 Thieves Saturday at 5:00 PM. Dignitas will move to the Lower Bracket where they will take on seventh seed Immortals on Thursday at 6:00 PM.
