There is a chill in the air, but it isn’t from the fall weather. The Lich King is returning to Hearthstone with a brand new undead army, ready to terrorize every opponent who stands in their way. March of the Lich King is the newest expansion for Hearthstone and it comes bearing new gifts for Hearthstone players.
New Class: Death Knight
The keynote addition to Hearthstone with March of the Lich King is the entrance of a brand new class, Death Knight. Last time players saw the Lich King, they could battle against them in the solo-adventures or even add them to their deck as a powerful late game closer. Now players can suit up and become the next Lich King – kind of.

The Death Knight class comes with a new hero power called “Ghoul Charge”. Ghoul Charge creates a 1/1 Ghoul with Charge that dies at the end of the turn. Ghoul Charge is a solid play in the early stages of the game as it lets players keep the board clean of weaker enemy minions, or it gives a player a chance to start whittling down their opponent’s life total. Most importantly, Ghoul Charge is the engine for a unique class trait for Death Knight.
Death Knight’s have a secondary resource called “Corpses”. Whenever a friendly minion dies, they create a Corpse. These Corpses help power up cards at the cost of using a Corpse. Sounds pretty gruesome, if not on-brand for a Death Knight.
The last new mechanic for the Death Knight is a deckbuilding mechanic called “Runes”. Death Knights have three runes to use to build their deck – Blood, Frost and Unholy. Death Knight’s cards have certain amount of runes that need to be a part of the deck in order to use them, making deck construction a unique experience for Death Knights.
New Cards, New Minion Types and New Keywords
As with every expansion, there are over 100 new cards for players to tinker and play with. Reborn makes it return as it makes sense to bring back a classic keyword to synergize with Death Knight’s Corpse passive. March of the Lich King also ushers in a new keyword “Manathirst”. These cards increase in power once a player reaches that mana level. They don’t have to spend that much mana to get the benefit, they just need the empty mana crystal amount.
Finally there is a new minion type called “Undead”. Undead is an interesting new type as it serves as a sort of “super type” for minions. Minions can be both Undead and a Beast, giving that card both type bonuses when that occurs.
There is plenty to be excited about for the newest expansion, with both veteran and new players getting a reason to hop back into the tavern once again.
