The Monster Hunter Now Rathian event has now concluded — providing unique weapons and armor to those who successfully farmed it. Though a step up from the previous Diablos event, this event was definitely was not without its flaws.
Events are Far too Difficult for Casual Players
To begin, the monster is simply incredibly difficult. Since Pink Rathian was a very limited time event, with massive spawns throughout the weekend, it very much creates a disappointing taste in many hunters mouths. The HP it has is a little bit insane, even at five stars, very much making perfect gameplay necessary for more more casual players. For those who have already pushed into the end game, they likely enjoyed the manageable challenge.
Of course, those who are super skilled at the game and capable of managing perfect dodges every time probably don’t have this issue. But for the casual player base, who rank around HR 30-40, soloing the monster was a momentous task.
Monster Hunter is known for having difficult boss fights. And perhaps the developers were trying to mimic this feel with the Pink Rathian. The issue really does lie with the monetization system surrounding potions. This is clearly a flaw in the game, which hasn’t been addressed since launch. The community continues to vocalize complaints regarding it, and though Monster Hunter Now acknowledged the issue, nothing surrounding it has changed.
And since all the equipment required Primescales, which are very rare, it creates a ton of issues with crafting. The spawn rates throughout the weekdays was way too seldom, with many never having witnessed it despite playing throughout the week. This made the event feel almost like a placebo existence, creating FOMA for those who simply could not find Pink Rathian despite grinding the game.
Pink Rathian Weekend
During the mass spawn weekend, this wouldn’t have been a problem if players had easy access to potions. They could easily go from spawn to spawn, and practice slaying Pink Rathian. But unfortunately, the Potion monetization is still absolutely terrible, making numerous failed attempts feel incredibly bad.
If the base combat and farming system was similar to Pokemon Go, it’d be fine. This is because rare Pokemon are often celebrated catches, and don’t heavily impact the gameplay experience. But for a Monster Hunter game, where DPS optimization really is the name of the game, locking the only Dragon Element weapon behind a limited time event doesn’t feel the best.
Improving, but still flawed
A big improvement from the Diablos event was the implementation of the Tobi-Kadachi Event, which helped players prepare to fight against Pink Rathian. But this is assuming players practically committed mass genocide on Tobi-Kadachi, upgrading weapons to at least grade 6. Without doing so, the Pink Rathian fight feels almost impossible alone.
Another improvement was the addition of retries on Paintballed monsters. This alowed players up to three attempts per paintballed monsters, which previously disappeared after the first failed attempt. But once again, the issue comes back to the monetization. Paintballs also cost money, with almost no other way outside of the random giveaways and referrals to claim them.
