After the Tekken 7 Grand Finals at Evo, Bandai Namco revealed a trailer for a free update coming to Tekken 7.
A teaser trailer for a new Tekken project, possibly Tekken 8 came afterward.
The trailer begins with the announcement that the Tekken World Tour is back. The World Tour is the official Bandai Namco-sponsored international tournament. The tournament features offline tournaments where the best get to compete to claim the best in their region and the world.
The tournament operates on a point system, where winning several other tournaments grant them more points. Major tournaments throughout the year include Evo, CEO, VSFighting X, Rev Major, and The MixUp.
Tekken Events Include:
- VSFighting X (Aug. 19-21)
- Rev Major (Sep. 17-18)
- The MixUp (Oct. 1-2)
Tekken 7 Battle Update
Accompanying the trailer includes the new update that will be coming to Tekken 7 on Aug. 17.
The first announcement for the update includes Balance Adjustments. Of course, the adjustments plan to balance out the roster, with Bandai Namco handing out buffs and nerfs through the cast. There are no clear indications or patch notes for what changes will be made.
The next addition to the battle update is what Bandai Namco labels “New Tactics.” There is no description or no explanation of what it could mean. However, in the gameplay footage in the trailer, a new mechanic will be what they mean.
New Wall Mechanic
Tekken 7 features many different mechanics in the combo system. Systems include wall breaks, wall splats, and wall bounces. Tekken 7 is a fighting game with a 3D plane that each character can maneuver around. Characters can also launch characters into walls, which allows them to extend their combo if hit correctly. The wall bounce is the newest addition to the mechanic, after the release of Geese Howard.
Traditionally, when a character is hit by a wall, they’d splat onto the wall and slide to the ground, while their opponent can still hit them. The wall bounce allows certain moves to launch characters into the wall and bounce right off of it, extending combos and opportunities.
The new mechanic will be called a wall crush state, it seems to create a stagger once successfully done. The stagger then leaves them vulnerable to more attacks that can lead to a wall break if the stage allows it.
Nobody knows much about the new mechanic and Bandai Namco is strangely very quiet about the new changes. It’s unclear whether the new wall mechanic will be replacing wall bounces, or will be just a new addition. Regardless, it’ll remain a big change to how people play Tekken 7 and the flow of combat.
Release Date
Despite how quiet the developers are regarding the new update and announcements, the update is still being released on Aug. 17. The update launches a day before the upcoming Netflix anime series Tekken Bloodline on Aug. 18.
