Fantasy Football Week 9 Running Back Rankings

Publish Date: November 1, 2023

The 2023-24 NFL season has been outstanding so far. Already there have been a ton of breakout players and fantasy duds that have made the game so entertaining. Bye weeks are starting to take place. This means that running backs like Christian McCaffrey and Travis Etienne Jr. will be out this week. On top of that, injuries have started to mount up at this point of the season. It’s always a great idea to evaluate backup options so that way fantasy managers are prepared if star players miss time. Here are the fantasy football week 9 running back rankings.

*Ratings are subject to change due to injury reports or possible move to the Injured Reserve List

(Check out the section below for details on players already rumored to possibly miss this week and how their replacement options rank for the week)

Key:

Must Start- a player who is in your lineup regardless of the matchup or most circumstances. They Will likely finish near the top of the league in points that week and in most weeks.

Starting RB1- a player who makes fantasy owners comfortable starting week after week. Regardless of the matchup, this player has a high floor.

High-End RB2- a player who may not be likely to carry a lineup that week, but has the ability to have a breakout game and is teetering between RB1 and RB2 territory.

Starting RB2- a player who should be started in most lineups and should reach their point projection. This player is started because of their consistency and moderately high floor

Low RB2- a player who may not be a lock to start for a team every week, but will start more times than not. Their production may not be pretty or win a person their lineup but the production is consistent enough to make a fantasy owner comfortable starting them.

Flex- a player who could float around the territory of being benched, but is started due to the potential to play better than their point projection. However, this player has the potential to flop and cause a fantasy team to lose if he has a bad game.

Deep League Flex- a player who is more of a Hail Mary throw at the position. There are enough reasons to leave this player on the bench, but their upside makes them an attractive option. Desperate times may call for a player like this to be inserted into starting lineups.

Leave on the Bench- a player who should be avoided in all lineups that week. Many times this player could even be left on waivers.

Possible Changes that can occur before Sunday

RB2 Saquon Barkley, New York Giants

Saquon Barkley was limited in practice on Wednesday because of an ankle injury. He missed time earlier this season with a high ankle sprain. If Barkley misses Week 9 against the Las Vegas Raiders Matt Breida becomes RB23 between Jaylen Warren and Royce Freeman.

RB7 Derrick Henry, Tennessee Titans

Derrick Henry was limited in practice on Tuesday with an ankle injury. He is expected to play this week. If Henry misses Week 9 against the Pittsburgh Steelers Tyjae Spears moves up to RB20 between Zack Moss and James Cooks.

RB11 Raheem Mostert, Miami Dolphins

Raheem Mostert missed practice Wednesday with an ankle injury. He has been dealing with this injury for about a week now. If Mostert misses Week 9 against the Kansas City Chiefs Jeff Wilson Jr. moves up to RB22 between Jerome Ford and Jaylen Warren. Salvon Ahmed becomes the RB35 between Tyjae Spears and Dameon Pierce.

RB12 Joe Mixon, Cincinnati Bengals

Joe Mixon was limited in practice on Wednesday with a chest injury. It is unclear if this injury could affect his status for this week. If Mixon misses Week 9 against the Buffalo Bills Trayveon Williams becomes RB33 between Rochon Johnson and Tyjae Spears.

RB18 Aaron Jones, Green Bay Packers

Aaron Jones was limited in practice on Wednesday with a hamstring injury. This injury has limited Jones and held him out of games since he suffered in Week 1. If Jones misses Week 9 against the Los Angeles Rams A.J. Dillon moves up to RB17 between Isiah Pacheco and Darrell Henderson.

RB19 Gus Edwards, Baltimore Ravens

Gus Edwards missed practice on Wednesday with a toe injury. It is unclear if this injury could cause Edwards to miss time. If Edwards misses Week 9 against the Seattle Seahawks Justice Hill moves up to RB29 between Brian Robinson Jr. and Emari Demercado. Melvin Gordon if promoted from the practice squad would become RB48 between Darrynton Evans and Rico Dowdle.

RB22 Jerome Ford, Cleveland Browns

Jerome Ford was limited in practice on Wednesday with an ankle injury. He has been dealing with an ankle sprain for two weeks now. Ford surprisingly hasn’t missed any time because of the injury. If Ford misses Week 9 against the Arizona Cardinals Kareem Hunt moves up to RB13 between Tony Pollard and Rhamondre Stevenson. Pierre Strong Jr. moves up to RB40 between Zach Charbonnet and D’Onta Foreman.

RB30 Emari Demercado, Arizona Cardinals

Emari Demercado missed practice on Wednesday with a toe injury. Arizona could get extremely thin at running back of Demercado misses time. If Demercado misses Week 9 against the Cleveland Browns Keontay Ingram becomes RB32 between Devin Singletary and Rochon Johnson.

RB35 Dameon Pierce, Houston Texans

Dameon Pierce missed practice on Wednesday with an ankle injury. It is unclear if Pierce will miss time because of the injury. If Pierce misses Week 9 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Devin Singletary moves up to RB29 between Alexander Mattison and Brian Robinson Jr.

RB44 Jerick McKinnon, Kansas City Chiefs

Jerick McKinnon missed practice on Wednesday with a groin injury. If McKinnon misses Week 9 against the Miami Dolphins Clyde Edwards-Helaire becomes the RB44 between Kenneth Gainwell and Latavius Murray.
