The 2020 NFL Draft is over, giving us a clearer picture of rosters for the 2020 season. With that fantasy football rankings can be released. Here are the 2020 fantasy football defense rankings. (Note: These are best used for standard-scoring leagues and will be updated until the season starts)
1-5
1. Pittsburgh Steelers
After the Steelers traded for Minkah Fitzpatrick last year, their defense was totally transformed. They ranked second in fantasy points last year and with a full season of Fitzpatrick should be able to reach the top spot. Having Ben Roethlisberger healthy for the full season should help keep the defense off the field more too.
2. San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers ranked third last season. Nick Bosa and the defensive line will continue to produce, even without DeForest Buckner. The team drafted Javon Kinlaw to help in the middle and should be able to improve this year.
3. Baltimore Ravens
They ranked fourth last season and the Ravens should be good once again. Patrick Queen was selected in the first round, which will give them their best inside linebacker since C.J. Mosley. The offense seems like they are focused on running the ball and controlling the clock, which helps as well.
4. Buffalo Bills
The Bills ranked 12th as a fantasy defense last year, but there are reasons they should improve this year. They have a solid secondary and their division does not have a clear frontrunner. With six games against the Jets, Patriots and Dolphins, the Bills should be able to score some points as a fantasy defense.
5. New England Patriots
Last season, the Patriots were by far the best fantasy defense, but they lost some players in free agency and some players to sitting out due to Covid-19. The offense will also take a step back without Tom Brady, meaning the Patriots will slide down these rankings this year.
6-10
6. Chicago Bears
Chicago still has a very talented defense, but ranked 20th in fantasy points last season. Khalil Mack will have to help the defense get back to form, but the offense needs to stay on the field longer to help their defense out.
7. Minnesota Vikings
The Vikings ranked sixth-last year, but lost most of their corners. Mike Hughes, Jeff Gladney and other corners will need to step up, but if they do, the Vikings shouldn’t take too much of a hit this season.
8. Los Angeles Rams
With Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey, the Rams have two of the best players in the league on their defense. The rest of their starters aren’t bad either and helped them rank fifth as a fantasy defense in 2019.
9. Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers ranked 27th in fantasy scoring last year, but if they can stay healthy they can improve a lot in 2020. Derwin James, Joey Bosa, Melvin Ingram, Chris Harris Jr., Casey Hayward, Desmond King and the newly drafted Kenneth Murray should be able to create a top 10 fantasy defense.
10. New Orleans Saints
New Orleans’ defense has vastly improved over the last few years and ranked ninth in fantasy scoring. They have several star players on all levels of the defense including, Cameron Jordan, Marshon Lattimore, Demario Davis and Malcolm Jenkins. The Saints should finish around the same range this year.
11-15
11. Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs are known for their high-powered offense, but their defense ranked eight in fantasy scoring last season. Their offense puts a lot of points on the board, which allows their defense to play aggressively.
12. New York Jets
Without C.J. Mosley, the Jets still ranked seventh in fantasy scoring last year. Now that Mosley will be healthy and Jamal Adams will be patrolling the backend of the defense, the Jets should be successful on the defensive side of the ball again.
13. Tennessee Titans
After ranking 11th in scoring last season, the Titans look like they will be good again. They lost Jurrell Casey in free agency, but have a lot of pieces still in place to be a top 15 fantasy defense.
14. Denver Broncos
The Broncos ranked 17th in fantasy scoring in 2019 and could jump back into the top 15 if healthy. When Von Miller and Bradley Chubb are both on the field, they create havoc for opposing offenses.
15. Seattle Seahawks
Seattle was 13th last year and will be a solid fantasy defense again this season. They still have Bobby Wagner and K.J. Wright, but also added cornerback Quinton Dunbar to shore up the secondary.
