Each week teams will be fighting for position in an effort to make the College Football Playoff. The teams will be ranked each week, but what matters most is who they have played and beaten already on the field. Preseason rankings will not be taken into consideration here. Here is College Football Playoff Bracketology October 9.
CFP Four
1. Ohio State Buckeyes (6-0)
Ohio State is not playing perfectly, but other top teams have struggled. The Buckeyes defeated Michigan State 49-20 in week 6. Their win over Notre Dame looks better after the Fighting Irish have won three straight games.
This week: BYE
2. Georgia Bulldogs (6-0)
After two subpar performances, Georgia took care of business against Auburn, as they won 42-10. Their win against Oregon really helps them out, as the Ducks keep winning. Georgia has bigger games coming up in a few weeks.
This week: vs. Vanderbilt Commodores (3-3)
3. Tennessee Volunteers (5-0)
Tennessee didn’t just win, they won big over LSU. With wins over LSU, Pittsburgh and Florida already, they look decently battle-tested. They head into next week looking forward to one of their biggest games of the 21st century.
This week: vs. Alabama Crimson Tide (6-0)
4. Clemson Tigers (6-0)
The Tigers didn’t have much trouble beating Boston College this week. Their wins over Wake Forest and NC State means that their toughest games are behind them and that they have earned a spot in the top four, for now.
This week: at Florida State Seminoles (4-2)
First Four Out
5. Alabama Crimson Tide (6-0)
Alabama slides down in these rankings for a few reasons. They did beat Texas A&M, but it went down to the wire. The team clearly missed starting quarterback Bryce Young; without him, they may struggle more. Furthermore, they don’t have a win over a ranked team, although that may change when the new polls come out. Everything is still right in front of Alabama.
This week: at Tennessee Volunteers (5-0)
6. UCLA Bruins (6-0)
Chip Kelly has UCLA undefeated and already bowl-eligible through six weeks. The Bruins defeated Utah, who was ranked 11th, this weekend to really put them on the radar. The Pac-12 South will be interesting down the stretch.
This week: BYE
7. Oklahoma State Cowboys (5-0)
Oklahoma State battled with a tough Texas Tech team and came out on top. Their best win is still over Baylor, who fell out of the rankings, but the Cowboys look pretty good in the Big 12.
This week: at TCU Horned Frogs (5-0)
8. TCU Horned Frogs (5-0)
In one of the more entertaining games of the season, the Horned Frogs defeated Kansas on the road for a ranked win. The rest of their schedule hasn’t been great, although it does start to get tougher now.
This week: vs. Oklahoma State Cowboys (6-0)
Next Four Out
9. Ole Miss Rebels (6-0)
After starting slowly against Vanderbilt, Ole Miss was able to recover enough to win pretty comfortably. They are undefeated, but are now hurt by the fact that their best win over Kentucky looks weaker after the Wildcats lost to South Carolina.
This week: vs. Auburn Tigers (3-3)
10. Penn State Nittany Lions (6-0)
The Nittany Lions were on a bye in week 6. They haven’t defeated anyone of note, although a win on the road at Auburn is something they won’t soon forget. Things get real for the Nittany Lions this week.
This week: at Michigan Wolverines (6-0)
11. USC Trojans (6-0)
USC defeated Washington State in a 30-14 result. The Cougars have a solid squad, which gives some more hope for USC this season. They play on the road at Utah this week, which will really test their might.
This week: at Utah Utes (4-2)
12. Michigan Wolverines (6-0)
Jim Harbaugh’s squad didn’t look good against Indiana, but they came away with the win. They are still undefeated, but haven’t played a very tough schedule at all. That changes this week.
This week: vs. Penn State Nittany Lions (5-0)
