Sweat created an impact for Texas over his four seasons with the Texas Longhorns. He is now in the 2024 NFL Draft.
As a three-star recruit in the class of 2019, Sweat decided to stay in state to play for Texas. He played sparingly as a freshman, logging eight tackles, one tackle for loss and a sack. Sweat increased his production for his sophomore season, as he tallied 22 tackles, four tackles for loss and one sack. In 2021 he continued his development with 22 total tackles, two tackles for loss and one sack. He started most of the season in 2022, registering 30 total tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss. His play helped Texas go 8-5. Sweat decided to return for an extra year of eligibility in 2023, totaling 45 tackles, eight tackles for loss and two sacks. He led Texas to the College Football Playoff in 2023.
Following the appearance in the College Football Playoff, Sweat entered the 2024 NFL Draft. He is currently projected to be a day-two pick.
T’Vondre Sweat Strengths
Sweat is a massive defensive lineman, allowing him to line up at nose tackle. He stands 6-foot-4 and 362 pounds, which gives him great strength. There may be some room for him to cut some weight and still be effective, if he comes in over his listed weight. With his good size and strength comes good length, which he uses to disengage quickly.
His run defense will be the most enticing thing about his play. He has shown to have good gap integrity and Sweat can take on double teams well. This allows linebackers to run clear to the football. He sheds decently quickly and can finish plays with a tackle for ball carriers that come within his long reach.
One area he can impact the game against the pass is his ability to push the pocket. His strength allows him to push interior linemen backwards, which makes the pocket smaller for a quarterback to operate in. Doing this makes the quarterbacks scramble and allows others to pick up sacks.
T’Vondre Sweat Weaknesses
While pushing the pocket is nice, he doesn’t add much as a pass rusher. Sweat doesn’t often have a pass rush plan outside of pushing the pocket. He doesn’t show many more moves other than the bull rush. In the NFL, he will likely be a two-down player who will have to be taken out for passing downs.
His motor comes and goes. There are plays where he shows good effort, but that doesn’t consistently show up on tape. He already won’t be a player that will play all three downs for a defense, so he needs to maximize the snaps he is on the field.
Sweat is an average at best athlete for the position. His calling card is his size, but his quickness at the snap is just decent. He doesn’t have great agility or flexibility. Sweat will have to win with technique and strength at the next level.
