The San Antonio Spurs’ arena has officially changed names from the AT&T Center to the Frost Bank Center. This is the third time in the last 21 years that the arena’s name has changed.
The Frost Bank Center, previously named the SBC Center from 2002 to 2006 and the AT&T Center from 2006 to 2023 after SBC was renamed AT&T, was opened in 2002. The Spurs’ moved into this arena after previously playing in the Alamodome.
AT&T elected to not renew its contract for the name of the arena in 2021. The Spurs’ failed to find a new partner during the 2022 season, keeping the AT&T Center name.
Here is the official announcement from the Spurs’ Twitter page.
History Between Spurs and Frost Bank
The Spurs’ and Frost Bank have been partners for over 50 years and will continue their partnership with the naming rights of their arena. Frost Bank served as the Spurs’ first jersey sponsor a few years ago.
This partnership closely knits two of the most storied San Antonio families, the Frosts and Holts. The Frosts started Frost Bank in 1868 and the Holts own a majority stake in the San Antonio Spurs.
Frost Bank’s 1973 investment helped bring the Spurs from Dallas to San Antonio. They also sponsor the soon to be opened Frost Plaza at the Rock, the Spurs’ new $500 million training center.
The Spurs’ won one championship under the SBC Center name and three more under the AT&T Center name. They hope that the winning continues in the Frost Bank Center after selecting Victor Wembanyama first overall in the draft.
