The San Antonio Spurs have many decisions to make this offseason after landing the number one pick in the draft. This includes whether or not to resign some of their upcoming free agents.
San Antonio is expected to take Victor Wembanyama first overall in the upcoming NBA Draft, as well as enter free agency with roughly $37 million in cap space. San Antonio has six players that could enter free agency this upcoming offseason. Four of them will be restricted free agents and the other two unrestricted.
Restricted Free Agents
Tre Jones is coming off his career-best season after taking over as the starting point guard of the Spurs. The fourth-year guard out of Duke is set to enter free agency as a restricted free agent. He could avoid free agency if him and the Spurs reach a deal by June 30th. The question is whether or not the Spurs see Jones as their point guard of the future. They could opt to trade up in the draft and take a point guard or sign one in free agency.
Other Spurs-restricted free agents include Romeo Langford, Sandro Mamukelashvili, Julian Champagnie and Dominick Barlow. Mamukelashvili and Champagnie saw an increase of minutes toward the end of the season and are likely to return to San Antonio after being key role players.
Romeo Langford is unlikely to return to San Antonio as his qualifying offer will be set at almost $7 million.
Both Dominick Barlow and Julian Champagnie are both on a two-way contract. Expect Champagnie to be signed to a multi-year extension after impressing as a knockdown shooter toward the end of the season.
Unrestricted Free Agents
Keita Bates-Diop and Gorgui Dieng are the Spurs’ only unrestricted free agents. Bates-Diop was a big part of the rotation over the last few seasons, so expect the Spurs to bring him back. On the other side, Dieng was cut by the Spurs midway through last season before being resigned by the team. Dieng didn’t see many minutes down the stretch for San Antonio so don’t expect him to be back with the team next season.
Extension Eligible
Both Devin Vassell and Zach Collins are eligible for an extension this upcoming offseason.
Vassell will enter his final year of his rookie contract and is expected to sign a long term extension this summer. As the starting shooting guard last season he impressed and put up career-best numbers last season despite being out for half of it with a knee injury.
Collins is also expected to sign an extension as head coach, Gregg Popovich, had some nice things to say about him at the end of the season. He took over as the starting center after the Spurs traded away Jakob Poeltl at last season’s deadline. Collins will more than likely slot into a bench role next season with the Spurs likely to draft Wemby.
The Spurs have many decisions to make this offseason on their upcoming free agents. It all starts with the NBA Draft on June 22.
