The New York Rangers win epic comeback after being down 2-0 in the first period against the Dallas Stars. They beat the Stars 7-4 in a goal-scoring frenzy. Here is how the game went down.
Action-Packed First Period
It didn’t take long for this game to kick off at a fast-paced speed. It also didn’t take long for the Stars to score. Only 49 seconds into the first period, Esa Lindell (4) shot at an awkward angle scoring on his backhand. Joel Hanley (2) assisted on the play.
In his 800th NHL game, Tyler Seguin (18) scored his 299th goal of his career on a deflection. Joel Kiviranta (5) assisted on the goal, earning his 100th NHL assist.
It wasn’t looking good for the Rangers at all, but things changed a bit around the halfway point in the first. Greg McKegg (2) scored on a tip-in after the initial shot by K’Andre Miller (8) got through. Julien Gauthier (4) also assisted on the play.
The Rangers scored on the power play on Mika Zibanejad’s (23) slap shot. This occurred only seven seconds into the PP and took place when the Stars’ Roope Hintz received a hooking minor against Jonny Brodzinski. This gave the Rangers a little more hope to keep themselves in the game. This goal was assisted by Ryan Strome (29) and Artemi Panarin (49).
Adam Fox (8) scored just over a minute later on a tip-in between goalie Jake Oettinger’s legs. This goal was assisted by Jacob Trouba (20) and Panarin (50).
Only 36 seconds later, the Rangers made it 4-2, coming back after a two-goal deficit. Panarin got goal number 16 on a wrist shot. Miller (9) and Dryden Hunt (8) assisted on the play.
Some Controversy in the Second Period
This period was much more calm, although the Stars were more physical and upped their shot on goal. Both teams benefited from the power play.
At 7:10 in the second, Jason Robertson (30) got a 5-on-3 PPG, scoring on his backhand to get within one on the scoreboard. This occurred after Ryan Lindgren got an interference penalty against Alexander Radulov and shortly later, Brodzinski received a tripping call against Jamie Benn.
Robertson scored after the puck went off of his glove, causing the Rangers to argue the call of a goal. It was looked at and it was deemed a good goal because it deflected off of Robertson’s glove. It was a break for the Stars, as well as an unfortunate play for the Rangers. The goal was scored with only two seconds left of the 5-on-3 PP. John Klingberg (28) got the assist.
Another controversial play took place as the Rangers made it 5-3 late in the second. Patrik Nemeth (2) had to wait for confirmation for the goal as he scored on a wrap-around, battling to get the puck in. There was video review due to the possibility of Nemeth pushing the goalie’s equipment into the net, allowing the goal to cross the line. This did not occur, therefore, it was a good goal.
A Stars Comeback?
Being down two goals with only 20 minutes left, the Stars knew they needed to do something and do it fast. At 8:09 in the third, Joe Pavelski scored on a tip-in, making it a one-goal game. Hintz (26) and Klingberg (29) assisted on the play.
The Rangers give themselves a little bit of insurance as they make a two-goal game again. Barclay Goodrow (13) scored on a wrist shot on a goal that Oettinger wishes he had back as it goes between his legs. Filip Chytil (9) got the assist.
The Stars took out their goalie with 3:25 left, but the Rangers took advantage of this as Strome (14) scored an empty netter. Hunt (10) and Panarin (52) got the assists.
What to Look Forward to
The Rangers will be facing the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday, March 15th at 7 p.m. ET. The last time the Rangers faced the Ducks, they won 4-1. Hopefully this happens again as the Rangers are currently tied with the Pittsburgh Penguins with 79 points, second in the Metropolitan Division. Both the Penguins and the Rangers are chasing the Carolina Hurricanes who have 87 points.
The way the Rangers played after being down two goals in Dallas is exactly how they need to play till the end of the season and beyond. If they do this, Ranger fans everywhere will be in a for a fun and exciting playoffs.
