The Eagles lost at home this weekend to Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers, 17-11. It seemed like both teams were struggling on offense for the first half of the game. The offenses got a little better in the second half but points still came at a premium. This was largely a defensive match-up that came down to who could finish drives at the end. This article will recap the Philadelphia Eagles’ latest game against the San Francisco 49ers.
The Eagles Offense
Hurts had a good day but couldn’t score points
The Eagles had a quiet day on offense overall against this San Francisco 49ers team. Jalen Hurts did put up some pretty good numbers even though the Eagles have very little to show for it. He was 12/23 and threw for 190 passing yards. He also rushed for 82 yards and one touchdown.
Hurts stuck with the short passes most of the game, but he did take his chances downfield, which was a positive in this game. There was a missed opportunity early in the game where it was thought that  Jalen Reagor caught a deep touchdown pass to put the Eagles in the lead by 10. This ended up being called back due to Illegal touching, as Reagor stepped out of bounds during the play. Hurts did connect on one deep pass to Quez Watkins deep within their own territory and switched sides of the field in an instant to give the Eagles a scoring opportunity. Watkins ended the day with two receptions for 117 yards.
The tights ends still aren’t bringing in any production
The Eagles are still struggling to get their tight ends involved. Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert were both targeted very few times. Goedert had two receptions for 24 yards and Ertz had even less with one reception for six yards. Ertz and Goedert have proven to be a dynamic duo in the past but the offense is just not finding ways to get them the ball.
Both running backs had quiet days
The running game for the Eagles was okay. Miles Sanders finished the day with 55 yards. He didn’t have any explosive runs throughout the game. He mostly helped the Eagles move the chains and get downfield. Kenneth Gainwell did not have a spectacular day as he had six carries for 14 yards. He did catch some short to medium passes from Hurts. He ended the day with 18 yards receiving.
The Eagles Defense
The Eagles’ defense had a good game even though they lost. The defensive line seemed like they controlled the line of scrimmage all day. They kept San Francisco rushing attack at a minimum all day. The defense also did a nice job protecting against the pass. Garoppolo had 314 yards passing in his outing before the Eagles against Detroit. The Eagles held Garoppolo to 189 yards passing and one touchdown.
The top tackler for the Eagles in this game was Alex Singleton who is always around the ball. Singleton has excellent vision and can read where the ball is going. He had 11 tackles in this game. Eric Wilson and Anthony Harris finished right behind him with 10 tackles each.
The Eagles did force two fumbles in this game but were recovered by San Francisco both times. The Eagles also didn’t have an interception in this game. A turnover really could have done some good for the Eagles. This would have given them a couple more offensive possessions.
Overall the defense played great in this game and kept the 49ers to only 17 points. The Eagles just could not capitalize on anything offensively. Most of their drives ended in punts, which will not win a team a lot of football games. The Eagles’ next game will be against the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night next week. We will see if the Eagles can bounce back and a make statement within the NFC East. This has been a recap of the Philadelphia Eagles game against the San Francisco 49ers.
