Jordan Howard’s player attributes
Howard is a powerful running back that is not afraid to run defenders over. His strength allows him to shed defenders off and stay upright while he runs. This allows him to get plenty of yards after the first contact with a defender. Howard is a bigger back at 6-foot and weighs 230 pounds. The Eagles can use Howard in the red-zone as he can bully his way through the line of defenders.
Howard is mostly known as a bruising running back, but Howard also has some speed and can definitely build up a head of steam if the defense allows him to get into the open field. Howard’s attributes gives the Eagles a different look at the running back position. The Eagles have two elusive backs that are good with their footwork and can evade defenders. Howard could be used late in games against a tired defense and can give production late in games.
Howard’s past seasons in the NFL
Howard began his career with the Chicago Bears. The Eagles running back was drafted with the 150th overall pick in the 2016 draft. He made an impact right away during his rookie year in Chicago. Howard accrued 1,313 yards and six touchdowns. He also showed he was formidable in the passing game that year as he had 298 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown. In his second year in the NFL, Howard impressed again and gained over a thousand yards. He had less yardage but he made up for that with his ability to find the end zone as he had nine rushing touchdowns. Howard would end up playing one more year in Chicago, where he just barely did not make the thousand yard mark. He did, however, score nine touchdowns during that 2018 season.
After the 2018 season, Howard switched teams and went to Philadelphia in 2019, as said earlier. Most recently, Howard was on the Dolphins where he did not get much playing time. He was then signed back on the Eagles practice squad in November of 2020 and made it on the main roster for a split second.
Was signing Howard a good deal for the Eagles?
Overall, this is a solid move for the Eagles. Howard already has history with the Eagles and is familiar with the team and culture. He also adds a veteran presence to the depth chart, as Boston Scott and Miles Sanders have just both finished their second years in the NFL. Howard will be able give them some advice and teach them throughout the season. Howard will more likely be the Eagles third string running back, but do not be surprised if he gets some playing time throughout the year, especially in the redzone.
