When looking at a roster for the upcoming season there are many variables that need to be considered. It is yet to be known whether hero pools will be implemented again in some shape or form, whether the League will go to a pick ban system, or if it will be a free for all. That gives the GM (or more likely head coach in the case of the Dynasty) a challenge to see what parts still need to be covered with the players that they have signed. The Seoul Dynasty still have quite a few spots open to expand their roster. Here is a look at what the Dynasty have already, broken down by their individual heroes played.
Tank
For tanks normally there is a split between the off-tanks and the main tanks. The Dynasty have not had a pure off-tank since Joonhyuk ‘Zunba’ Kim, as Minhyuk ‘Michelle’ Choi was more of a flex tank. (It could be argued that Zunba as well was more of a flex tank than an off-tank). Currently, the only signed tanks are Minseo ‘Marve1’ Hwang and Jaehui ‘Gesture’ Hong for Season 4.
Gesture popped off on Roadhog during the playoffs, being a large component of helping the Dynasty reach the level of success that they did. Though he used the off-tank Roadhog to much success, he is most known for his main tank. His hero pool covers Orisa, Reinhardt, and Winston. The only main tank that wouldn’t be normally associated with him would be Hammond.
Marve1 has turned into a flex tank. Not in the traditional sense that Michelle was when he flexed onto DPS such as Pharah, but that he flexes between the main tank and off-tank role even more than Gesture did in Season 3. Though he was known for his Reinhardt and Winston, in Season 3 he was mostly seen in D.Va and Sigma. He can still play the main tank role, but it is a different skill set than off-tank and it seemed a little shakey during the last season. His D.Va was okay, but it is his Sigma that is most utilized which forced him into more of an off-tank role.
What is Missing?
That leaves a hole for Zarya and Hammond. Junyoung ‘Profit’ Park was the Zarya player for the London Spitfire Season 2 during GOATS and also hopped on the hero a couple of times during Season 3, but it creates an issue if one of the DPS players is the best Zarya player. It would be nice to sign a backup player who specializes in off-tanks if a free for all or pick ban system is what the League goes to.
DPS
While tanks and supports are split into ‘off/flex’ and ‘main’ the DPS role is projectile and hit scan. Normally there are hit scan and projectile specialists (think Jemin ‘Illicit’ Park who is a projectile specialist). Just like with the tanks, Seoul don’t really follow that trend. Profit is known for his Tracer, Pharah, and Genji. But he also plays Mei, Widow, Echo, Reaper, and Ashe at an Overwatch League level.
Dongeon ‘FITS’ Kim is also a mixed DPS player known for his Doomfist, Ashe, and Sombra. He also plays Widow, Genji, Hanzo, and McCree. His hero pool is a definite overlap with many heroes that Profit also plays. They were a good duo being able to switch back and forth depending on what was needed.
Jongryeol ‘Saebyeolbe’ Park comes in with the most traditional category of being the hit scan role. He is most known for playing Tracer. He has in his hero pool Widow, Sombra, McCree, Soldier, Ashe, and Reaper. This could be seen as limiting or a strength having a specialist in one certain kind of DPS.
Potential Additions?
There are heroes such as Torbjorn and Bastion most any player can effectively play. It hasn’t been since Season 1 that there was a player who thrived and played Junkrat, which was Seokwoo ‘Wekeed’ Choi. To have another very flexible player that could double up some of the projectile heroes such as Mei, Pharah, and Echo would be nice in case an extreme meta hits Overwatch.
Support
Supports are again split into main supports and flex supports. Youngwan ‘Creative’ Kim is the flex support for the Seoul Dynasty who helped them through the playoffs in Season 3. He has shown his prowess on Ana and Zen. The community has not seen a lot of Moira from him, so there is a bit of an unknown on how comfortable he is with that hero. Taesung ‘Anamo’ Jung is the newest main support to the squad. He is best remembered on the NYXL for his Mercy and Lucio. He has been rarely seen on Brig or Bap as it is Sunghyeon ‘Jjonak’ Bang who played Bap.
Change in Style and Heroes
That means there is a big hole. The Seoul Dynasty are missing a Baptiste, a Brig, and a Moira player. On top of missing three heroes, two of which has in the past been essential meta heroes to compositions, Anamo’s playstyle is much more passive than previous main supports that the Dynasty have had in Seungsoo ‘Jecse’ Lee, Jinwoo ‘Gambler’ Heo, and Tobi. That means the team will have to adjust to the new style of play. Though with the coaching staff being able to help Tobi grow as a Brig player they could also challenge Anamo to do the same. That said, there is a need for a support player to be added that is a Brig and Moira as well as either an Ana or Zen if it is ever a two flex support meta.
Hero Roster Holes?
The Seoul Dynasty have a lot of amazing parts to their Season 4 roster. In the past three seasons of the Overwatch League, the community has seen how volatile the meta can become. The ability to have the different components already ready to step in when a certain hero becomes meta is important to be consistent throughout the whole season. Whether the Dynasty decide to train up their existing members to fill the gaps or recruit some new talent will be seen in the coming months.
