Publish Date: October 3, 2024

The 2024-25 NFL season has begun which means fantasy football is back! The fantasy landscape has already changed since the preseason due to breakout players and major injuries across the league.Bye weeks are starting to take place. This means that quarterbacks like Sam LaPorta and Dallas Goedert will be out this week. On top of that injuries have started to mount up at this point of the season. It is always a great idea to evaluate backup options so that way fantasy managers are prepared if star players miss time. Here are the fantasy football week 5 tight end rankings.

[Ratings are subject to change due to injury reports or possible move to Injured Reserve List]

[Check out the section below for details on players already rumored to possibly miss this week and how their replacement options rank for the week]

Key:

Must Start- a player who is in your lineup regardless of the matchup or most circumstances. They Will likely finish near the top of the league in points that week and in most weeks.

Starting TE1- a player who makes fantasy owners comfortable starting week after week. Regardless of the matchup, this player has a solid floor.

TD Dependent Starter- a player who may not be a lock to start for a team every week, but will start more times than not because of depth at the position. Their production is based on whether they can get in the end zone or not. It can be the difference between a top 10 performance or a top 25 performance

Deep League Starter- a player whose ceiling isn’t high but should put up enough production to be started in deep leagues. When a player like this is started it is because their production though it will likely be low, will be better than a few options.

Leave on the Bench- a player who should be avoided in all lineups that week. Many times this player could even be left on waivers.

Players that could miss this week’s game

TE2 George Kittle, San Francisco 49ers

George Kittle missed practice on Wednesday with a rib injury. It is unclear if this injury could hold Kittle out of this week’s game. If Kittle misses Week 5 against the Arizona Cardinals Eric Saubert would be San Francisco 49ers’ starting tight end.

TE4 Trey McBride, Arizona Cardinals

Trey McBride missed last week’s game against the Washington Commanders with a concussion. If he misses Week 5 against the San Francisco 49ers Elijah Higgins becomes the TE24 between Erick All Jr. and Juwan Johnson.

TE6 Evan Engram, Jacksonville Jaguars

Evan Engram has missed the past three games due to a hamstring injury that was suffered just before Jacksonville’s Week 2 game against the Cleveland Browns. He has returned to practice this week but is still limited. If Engram misses Week 5 against the Indianapolis Colts Brenton Strange becomes the TE20 between Noah Fant and Isaiah Likely.

TE7 David Njoku, Cleveland Browns

David Njoku has missed his third straight game because of an ankle injury. He returned to practice this week in a limited capacity so he could return this week. If Njoku misses Week 5 against the Washington Commanders Jordan Akins becomes the TE26 between Austin Hooper and Jonnu Smith.

TE16 Cole Kmet, Chicago Bears

Cole Kmet was limited in practice on Wednesday with a knee injury. It is unclear if this injury will hold him out of this week’s game. If Kmet misses Week 5 against the Carolina Panthers Gerald Everett becomes the TE16 between Cade Otton and Taysom Hill.

TE20 Noah Fant, Seattle Seahawks

Noah Fant was limited in practice on Wednesday with a toe injury. This injury has been bothering him for weeks. If Fant misses Week 5 against the New York Giants AJ Barner moves up to TE23 between Hunter Henry and Erick All Jr.
