Many players have been hoping that League of Legends would release an MMO version of their extremely popular game. It would take place in the world of Ruenterra which has been fleshed out a lot recently not just in the lore but also in the newest games such as Legends of Runeterra and to a smaller extent Teamfight Tactics. Now it what was seemingly a throwaway post initially, one of the Vice Presidents of Riot Games, Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street has confirmed that a League of Legends MMO is in development.

It is an MMO

League of Legends has been most of the most popular and fastest-growing games of all time. Someone could very easily argue that it is number one. They have built out a game that until recently was seemingly all by itself. Then at the League of Legends 10 Year Anniversary, Riot Games actually revealed that they had secretly been working on a multitude of games in the background.
The Other Arms of Riot Games
These games have turned into extremely popular titles like Teamfight Tactics, Legends of Runeterra and VALORANT. All of these games are different and for VALORANT specifically, it is not even connected to the League of Legends universe. But these are all the games that have officially come out and during the anniversary event, Riot Games previewed plenty of other games that have not been announced or shown at all since.
The only exception to this is Ruined King: A League of Legends Story. This is the first true RPG that Riot Games are releasing through Airship Syndicate and Riot Forge. While the game is slated for release in 2021, it will be the first game that is truly focused on telling a story in the League of Legends universe. Every other game Riot Games has released has had lore added to it but it has never been a story in and of itself.
With Riot Games really stretching their wings and taking the dive everyone has hoped they would for many years, it will be interesting to see if they keep this one in house. It seems unlikely that they would want someone else working on what may be their biggest game to date, and that is saying a lot considering what League of Legends is on its own.
