NFL week 4 is here and football is back. Picking NFL games straight up is hard enough, but picking against the spread is even tougher. Here are the NFL week 4 picks against the spread. (Spreads are from ESPN as of Thursday morning)
Last week: 7-9, Overall: 29-19
Thursday Night
Philadelphia Eagles at Green Bay Packers (-4)
Philadelphia is banged up and gets the short week of rest in this one, which is not a good combination. The Packers now have a good defense and the offense should show more signs of progress in this game.
Pick: Packers
Sunday Afternoon
Cleveland Browns at Baltimore Ravens (-6.5)
The Browns have only won one game so far and it happened to be over an injured Jets team. Baltimore, on the other hand, has two wins and almost beat the Chiefs in Kansas City. Lamar Jackson will want to play well against the quarterback that was drafted first overall in his draft class.
Pick: Ravens
Tennessee Titans at Atlanta Falcons (-4)
Both of these teams have had disappointing starts to the season and are 1-2. The Falcons are at home and have a solid offense, but the Titans should be able to keep this one close, especially if their defense played like they did in week 1.
Pick: Titans
New England Patriots (-7) at Buffalo Bills
This AFC East matchup features two 3-0 teams. Buffalo is at home, but they have only beat the Giants, Jets and Bengals so far. New England hasn’t won games over significantly better teams, but they have dominated offensively and defensively this season.
Pick: Patriots
Kansas City Chiefs (-6.5) at Detroit Lions
Detroit sure has come a long way since tying the Cardinals in week 1. Wins over the Eagles and Chargers are nice, but the Chiefs are on another level right now. Patrick Mahomes will have a big day against the Detroit secondary.
Pick: Chiefs
Oakland Raiders at Indianapolis Colts (-6.5)
Oakland looked bad against the Vikings last week and will have another road game this week against the Colts. Indianapolis has played well and will control the clock and be able to win by at least a touchdown.
Pick: Colts
Los Angeles Chargers (-15.5) at Miami Dolphins
This is the smallest spread in a Dolphins game since week 1. The Chargers do have some injuries, but are still way more talented than Miami. Their defense will pressure the quarterback and the offense will move the ball easily for the win.
Pick: Chargers
Washington Redskins at New York Giants (-2.5)
It was a tough schedule to start the season for Washington, as they played the Eagles, Cowboys and Bears. They are 0-3, but should be able to keep this one close, especially because the Giants are without Saquon Barkley and Daniel Jones will be in his second career start.
Pick: Redskins
Carolina Panthers at Houston Texans (-4.5)
The Texans have won two games by a combined eight points. They are a solid team, but aren’t really designed to blow teams out. Kyle Allen has played well in relief of the injured Cam Newton and could keep the game close.
Pick: Panthers
Sunday Evening
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Los Angeles Rams (-9.5)
It would not be wise to pick the Buccaneers after losing to the Giants last week. The Rams only beat the Browns by three, but it was a road, prime time game. At home, the Rams will be able to take care of business and cover.
Pick: Rams
Seattle Seahawks (-5) at Arizona CardinalsÂ
Arizona has yet to get a win, but have been close. The Seahawks aren’t really designed to blowout teams, but they should be able to beat the Cardinals by a touchdown. Russell Wilson has been on fire and could have a big game against the Cardinals.
Pick: Seahawks
Minnesota Vikings at Chicago Bears (-2)
Kirk Cousins doesn’t play well against good teams. The Bears will stack the box to try and stop Dalvin Cook. If they do that and make Cousins beat them, Chicago will be able to cover this small spread.
Pick: Bears
Jacksonville Jaguars at Denver Broncos (-3)
The Broncos are playing really bad right now. Denver’s defense isn’t pressuring the quarterback or forcing turnovers. Jacksonville will play good defense and Gardner Minshew should be able enough points to at least keep it close.
Pick: Jaguars
Sunday Night
Dallas Cowboys (-2.5) at New Orleans Saints
This had the makings of a great matchup with Drew Brees vs. the Cowboys. It will still likely be a good game, as Teddy Bridgewater played well against Seattle. Dallas will control the clock and grind out a win, by more than a field goal.
Pick: Cowboys
Monday Night
Cincinnati Bengals at Pittsburgh Steelers (-4)
Two 0-3 teams will meet on Monday Night Football. The Steelers are at home and have a solid defense, making them the smart pick. Cincinnati has had an inconsistent defense and no running game, which will hurt their chances of keeping up with the Steelers.
Pick: Steelers
