Teamfight Tactics and the auto chess genre as a whole can take some getting used to for newer players. Getting the names of the champs and items can be a task of its own and that doesn’t even include the time it takes to master strategy and understand the deeper intricacies of the game. But, to take that first step towards mastery, there are a few small things that newer players can focus on in TFT that will greatly help them to succeed.
Don’t Re-Roll in the Early Game
This is one of the most tempting but fatal things players can do in TFT. An early Void or Noble composition may drop on the table to start the match and a newer player may be tempted to try and re-roll to get their Garen or Kha’Zix to level two or three. But, if the first one or two re-rolls don’t lend themselves to the sort of army a player is building and they continue to roll, it will leave them broke in the late game, if they even make it that far.
Get to 50 Gold as Quick as Possible
Instead of re-rolling, just be patient. Lose a few games and earn a higher priority on the carousel round and continue to build economy. Once there are 30, 40 and even up to 50 coins stockpiled, that is when it’s time to begin considering to re-roll.
For reference, what getting to these higher increments of gold does is it builds a higher income each round. If a player has 50 gold, they earn an additional five gold each round, this is the case for every multiple of 10, with 50 being the highest cap. Because there is no benefit to being at 60 or 70 gold, once a player has made it to 50, it’s smart to either re-roll, buy champs and/or buy XP to get down to 50.
Hold here for a few rounds and keep an eye on total HP. If that gets down close to 20 or 30, that is when it’s time to really begin spending. Do not let your sprite die with 40 gold in the bank. If anything, just spend it all on XP and get an extra champ out there to complete a synergy or two.
When in Doubt, Follow the Yellow Brick Road
The carousel is currently one of the most overwhelming parts of TFT for newer players. There is no way to hover over a champ or item to get its name or effect, players just have to know from looking at it what to go for. A good rule of thumb to help make that easier is to simply look for yellow things.
The Recurve Bow and Spatula are the two items this applies to. Two Spatulas makes one of the best items in the game in Force of Nature and Recurve Bows are useful for just about any army. Look for these on the carousel.
Additionally, legendary champs have a yellow circle around them. Even if these do not fit the army you have, they can either be good off-build champs (like Yasuo, for example) or they sell for the highest cost. If there aren’t any already combined items on the carousel, or if these aren’t even recognizable to a new player, just go by the rule of yellow.
These three basic ideas can do a lot to get a new player started on TFT but even these are just a starting point. So much more goes into the game, from positioning and beating the monsters, to which items are best stacked, to a plethora of other factors.
