Starfield ship stealing allows the player to add the specified ship to their collection, thereby increasing customization options. Here is how to steal ships in Starfield.
There are currently two known methods to do so: Destroying the engine or pillaging during free roam.
Starfield ship stealing: Engine destruction
This specific method requires players to follow a specific number of steps.
- Target the enemy ship during a Space Battle
- Destroy the ship engine (DO NOT DESTROY THE ENTIRE SHIP)
- Board the ship
- Defeat the crew
- Infiltrate the pilot seat
- Undock the ship
- Jump to the nearest city and find a ship technician
- Pay the ship technician 1000 credits to repair the ship
Long story short, to steal a ship, first destroy the enemy ship engine. Then kill the entire crew, take over the pilot ship, and bring it to a technician to get it fixed.

Ship destruction can become quite tedious, especially when attempting to farm them in Starfield.
Here are tips to help facilitate the process.
Choose an appropriate weapon
Some weapons are better at breaking engines than others, providing great engine damage while minimizing damage to the entire ship. This is important because if the player simply destroys the entire ship, rather than the engine, they won’t be able to steal it.
Recommended weapons:
- Electromagnetic Damage (DM)
- Talk to the Ship Technician to install
- Energy Weapon
Targeting a specific ship and engine
When entering targeting mode, Players can see the ship’s engine health, which is indicated with the abbreviation ENG. Once destroyed, approaching the ship should allow the player to board.
It’s recommended to destroy all other surrounding ships, excluding the one the player wants to steal. This is because the other ships may get in the way, and prevent ship boarding.

Piloting the enemy ship
Once the entire enemy crew has been killed, step into the Pilot Seat. Keep in mind, certain ships will require docking to faction that they belong to. And to pilot a ship, the player will need piloting skills that match up with the ship’s class.
Starfield Ship Stealing: Free roam method
This specific method requires players to follow a specific number of steps.
- Enter free roam
- Find ship landing sites while scanning
- Defeat the crew
- Infiltrate the pilot seat
- Jump to the nearest city and find a ship technician
- Pay the ship technician 1000 credits to repair the ship
This method is substantially more simple than the previous method. Simply look for Ship Landing Sites when scanning, indicated with a small icon with a flag on it. Then defeat the crew, infiltrate the pilot seat, and liftoff.
Keep in mind, certain ships will require docking to faction that they belong to. And to pilot a ship, the player will need piloting skills that match up with the ship’s class.
Unlike the previous method of stealing ships in Starfield, the ships while free roaming are random, therefore hard to predict and optimize.
