Each year there are coaches and players previously apart of the NFL that are named to the Hall of Fame. Most players and coaches have had to wait almost their whole life to get named to the Hall of Fame. They have the possibility to be inducted after only five years of retirement. Previous NFL coach for the Raiders, Tom Flores has a tremendous amount of accomplishments and yet all eight times he has been a nominee, he hasn’t made it past the semifinal cuts.
There is a precise way of narrowing down the nominees. They start out with around 100, then cut it down to 25 semi-finalists. Then later turn it into 15 finalists. A selection Saturday meeting is held and a decision is made on which seven will make it into the Hall of Fame. In order to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, a player needs 80% of the votes from selection Saturday.
NFL Coach/AFL Player Tom Flores
Flores has been a player, assistant coach and a head coach. He was the first ever Hispanic head coach in the NFL. Flores is one of four people to ever to win a Super Bowl as a player and a head coach. He is also one of two men to ever win a super bowl as a player, assistant coach and a head coach.
As a player, he played for three different teams, but his most productive season was 1966 passing for over 2,600 yards and 24 touchdowns in 14 games. He is one of only 20 players to be a part of the AFL all 10 years of its existence. He is the fifth in all-time passing yards in the AFL. He retired as a player in 1970 after winning a super bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs in 1969.
Flores help lead the Raiders to a Super Bowl (XI) under head coach John Madden. Also he led the Raiders to two super bowls (XV and XVIII) as the head coach. Because of his abilities to understand the game, his all-time coaching record is 97-87 in regular season and 8-3 in the playoffs.
2019 HOF
Flores has a long list of things that some players or coaches could only dream of accomplishing, yet he hasn’t made it in the top 25 despite being nominated eight different times. There are102 nominees that are up for the 2019 Hall of Fame class. Among the 102 is Flores. The 102 nominees will be cut down to 25 semifinalists in November, but will Tom Flores make it? He should and Flores is hoping that the ninth time is a charm.
