Following their 20-17 loss to the 2-9 Arizona Cardinals, CEO Mark Murphy decided to fire Mike McCarthy, who has been with the Packers for 13 seasons. McCarthy kept the Packers offense near the top of the NFL almost every year Rodgers was a starter. This Super Bowl head coach had great success with this team. Replacing him won’t be easy, but a fresh and re-vamped system will be good for the Packers.
Joe Philbin
Philbin has spent most of his NFL career with the Packers. Although he joined in 2003, he was named the offensive coordinator in 2007. He left in 2011 when he was offered the head coaching job with the Miami Dolphins. Philbin stayed until he was fired in the middle of the 2016 season. He then moved onto the Colts as an offensive line coach in 2016 and 2017 before coming back to the Packers.
The offensive coordinator was named Interim head coach after McCarthy was fired. He knows the system. he knows how Aaron Rodgers works and what he wants. Philbin has his chance to show his skills the last four games of the season.
Josh McDaniels
If Philbin’s not the right man for the job, a replacement includes New England Patriots’ offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. He’s been in the NFL since 2001. He’s been with the Patriots with the exception of three seasons.  He was the head coach of the Denver Broncos from 2009-2010, and the offensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams in 2011. This offensive coordinator has had tremendous success and knows who to coach a successful quarterback. He would be a good fit and is a huge name for in the conversation.
McDaniels has worked under one of the best coaches and another great quarterback. He is one of the top offensive minds in the NFL.
Bruce Arians
Bruce Arians was the former Arizona Cardinals’ head coach. As an offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2007-2011, he helped the team win Super Bowl XLIII. He also won NFL Coach of the Year in 2012 when he as the interim head coach for the Indianapolis Colts.
He won the award again in 2014 for leading the Cardinals to an 11-5 record. This lands second in the franchise record books for most wins in a season only behind 13 wins in 2015. It’s probably a long shot since he said he would only come back for the Browns. Yet, this experienced coach is a top pick for almost every team in need of a head coach.
John DeFilippo
John DeFilippo is the offensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings. He was hired in the offseason after helping coach the Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterbacks to a Super Bowl win last season. The Vikings’ offense is ranked 16th overall, and Kirk Cousins has been having a decent season. With 3,289 yards and 22 touchdowns so far this season, DeFilippo could certainly bring Rodgers and the Packers back up to where they used to be.
He runs a highly successful pass-heavy offense, which can easily favor Rodgers and his strengths and extraordinary abilities.
Making the Decision
Rodgers has been known to be involved with structuring his offense more than most quarterbacks. Murphy stated that “Rodgers is free to talk to us and provide input, but he won’t be part of the process.” The front office is under tremendous pressure to find someone to replace the successful coach. They need to find someone that is dynamic and can bring new light to the old offense. They also need to find someone that will demand respect from Rodgers and show that no one person is above the team.
