The 2024 Fenway Bowl features the 8-4 UConn Huskies against the 6-6 UNC Tar Heels. Here is the 2024 Fenway Bowl Preview.
UConn won eight games under Jim Mora Jr. to become bowl-eligible. They defeated one bowl-eligible team this season: Buffalo. They lost to Maryland and Wake Forest, both of which didn’t make bowl games.
The Huskies score 32.3 points per game, ranking 35th in the country. They pass for 202.3 yards (ranked 95th) and rush for 198.3 yards per game (ranked 26th).
Joe Fagnano has played the most at quarterback this season for the Huskies. He has passed for 1,480 yards, 18 touchdowns and four interceptions on 56.8 percent completion. Four receivers have at least 200 receiving yards on the season. The leading receiver, Skyler Bell, is on the transfer portal. T.J. Sheffield has 474 yards and three touchdowns this season.
Cam Edwards and Durrell Robinson have created a good duo in the backfield. Edwards has the team lead with 756 rushing yards and has added seven touchdowns. Robinson has totaled 731 yards and eight touchdowns, but is in the transfer portal.
Defensively, the Huskies allow 23.8 points per game, which ranks 57th in the country. They allow 223.8 passing yards and 135.3 rushing yards per game. Jayden McDonald leads the team with 119 total tackles. Tui Faumuina-Brown paces the team with 4.5 sacks. Cam Chadwick has been impressive in the secondary with six passes defended and two interceptions.
North Carolina won six games to make a bowl game before head coach Mack Brown was let go. They defeated one bowl-eligible team this season: Minnesota. All six of their losses were to teams that made bowl games.
The Tar Heels score 32.3 points per game, ranking 35th in the country. They pass for 233.9 yards (ranked 59th) and rush for 189.5 yards per game (ranked 30th).
Jacolby Criswell took over the starting quarterback job after Max Johnson went down with an injury. He has passed for 2,452 yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions on 58 percent completion. Six players have at least 200 receiving yards on the season. J.J. Jones leads the way with 570 yards and six touchdowns.
Leading rusher Omarion Hampton is opting out for this game to prepare for the draft. That will leave a lot of the running to David Gause, who had 314 rushing yards this season.
Defensively, the Tar Heels allow 28.2 points, ranking 91st in the country. They give up 232.6 passing yards and 144.4 rushing yards per game. Antavious Lane leads the team with 76 total tackles. Beau Atkinson and Amare Campbell tied for the team lead with six sacks a piece. Alijah Huzzie has made plays on the ball with eight passes defended and one interception.
North Carolina has some key opt-outs and struggled defeating quality teams during the regular season. Texas A&M should be able to run the ball well and control the game. The Aggies can also really limit North Carolina’s offense.
