Sha’Carri Richardson took home a close win at the Silesia Diamond League 100m. She finished with a time of 10.76, closely edging out Shericka Jackson over the final meters. Jackson finished just behind with a strong 10.78. The sprint battle provided an early season preview of two potential medal contenders at the World Championships in Budapest.
Two Different Skillsets
One of the most interesting parts about this race is how it displayed the different skillsets of Richardson and Jackson.
Sha’Carri Richardson’s biggest strength is her speed. Her quick stride allows her to reach a blistering top end speed during her races.
Shericka Jackson instead uses her power to get out of the blocks well and maintain a strong open stride. It makes a very clear distinction when watching the two of them race.
The race played out exactly as their skillsets would predict. Jackson got out well sharing the lead with another athlete for the first 40 meters or so. But, Richardson could be seen gearing up. As they reached the latter stages of the race, Richardson pulled up next to Jackson with her tenacious turnover.
When the two were stride for stride in the final 25 meters, their differences of form were on display. Richardson just seemed to be turning over at a much quicker rate. That was just enough to get the edge over Jackson’s long and powerful stride.
The race ultimately came down to a photo finish. Richardson got the win by only 0.02 seconds, meaning that more ultra close battles could be in store. It was her second win over Jackson this season.
Storylines Continue
There are a couple exciting storylines that came to clash in this race.
One of the biggest storylines is whether the Americans will be able to break up the force of Jamaican women who are in excellent form over the 100m and 200m currently.
It seems as though Sha’Carri Richardson could be the American woman to do so. She has ran extremely fast this season already, with a wind-legal 10.71 season’s best at the US Championships, where she took home the US title. She also ran a 10.57 with a generous +4.1 m/s wind.
Clearly, Richardson is in top form. She has even said that she is not back, she is better. Citius Mag’s Chris Chavez tweeted about this very statement from Richardson after her win in Silesia.
One of the biggest questions around Richardson was how well she would continue to do against the Jamaicans. This race answered that in spectacular fashion as she remains undefeated over 100m this season.
Another storyline coming out of this race had to do with the race’s third place finisher, Ewa Swoboda. Swoboda broke 11-seconds for the first time, running 10.94. The incredible part about this was that she did it in front of her home country of Poland. It make for an exciting moment as she celebrated around the track with the crowd of 23,000 that were just as pumped. Moments like this are what track and field is all about.
Richardson’s Efforts for the Sport
Sha’Carri Richardson continues to be one of the most well known figures in track and field. She makes a big splash anytime she steps onto the track.
Richardson seems to always have a tremendous celebration across the line, or a high-energy post race interview. She is not afraid to call her shot and it makes the race much more engaging for the viewer.
Beyond just the energy she brings on the track, Richardson is now helping to make fundamental changes to the sport off the track. She recently organized an athletes only meeting during the US Championships to privately discuss improvements that need to be made to the sport. It now seems that the athletes will use the meeting as a jumping off point to form some sort of athletes union.
Citius Mag reported Richardson’s comments on the idea of an athletes’ union after her win in Silesia.
By utilizing her voice in the sport, Richardson is now helping to create fundamental change within the sport. This is a great sign of her becoming a leader for both other athletes and fans. It is going to make for a memorable career that everyone can follow.
Moving Forward
This race gave a great preview for what could be in store at the World Championships later this year. Sha’Carri Richardson is continuing to prove that she is one of the best sprinters in the world. Shericka Jackson is also in top form currently and will certainly be in contention at the World Championships.
Although Richardson took home the win today, the margin was razor thin as only 0.02 seconds separated Richardson and Jackson. This means that the margins for that podium in the World Championships 100m will also be very small.
When the likes of Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Elaine Thompson-Herah are added in, the competition just seems that much tighter. It will make for a thrilling 100m final at the World Championships.
