The 2023 RBC Canadian Open will be played at Oakdale Country Club in Toronto, Ontario. Oakdale CC features a 7,079-yard par-70 track. The Canadian Open is the third-oldest tournament that still runs on the PGA Tour.
In 2022 the world’s third-ranked golfer, Rory McIlroy won the RBC Canadian Open after carding an impressive 19-under 261. Tony Finau and Justin Thomas finished in solo second and third place respectively. McIlroy goes into Thursday as the two-time defending champion.
This year’s competitors were on the receiving end of an unorthodox welcome to the tournament thanks to PGA Commissioner Jay Monahan. On Tuesday, the players who traveled to Canada to compete were asked to attend a meeting by Monahan. This meeting was to inform the players of the controversial news: The PGA Tour and DP World Tour are going to merge with LIV Golf.
Along with Rory McIlroy, this year’s field will feature some other big names. Sam Burns, Matt Fitzpatrick, Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrrell Hatton, Shane Lowry and Cameron Young will also be in attendance. Corey Conners, Mackenzie Hughes and Adam Svennson are three Canadian players who will be teeing it up. These three have each recorded a win during the 2022-23 season.
Players to watch
Rory McIlroy – McIlroy was in the fight last week at the Memorial Tournament but fell apart late. After a stellar second and third round, he was in a good position heading into Sunday. Despite this, he ended up carding a 3-over in the final round and placed T7. Rory has won this tournament two times in his career and is looking to bounce back after a rough final round last week.
Matt Fitzpatrick – After recording the second win of his career at the RBC Heritage in April, Fitzpatrick has cemented himself as a solid competitor. He has placed in the top ten four times this season and is seeking another strong outing in Canada.
Sahith Theegala – Although he has not yet earned his first win on the PGA Tour, Theegala is a player that should not be ignored. Sahith has placed in the top ten seven times this season and has been knocking on victory’s door since his strong 2021-22 season.
The 2023 RBC Canadian Open features a $9 million purse. The first two groups will tee off at 7:00am ET. You can stream the action live on ESPN+, Golf Channel or CBS.
