Today all 31 general managers met at Boca Raton, Florida for the annual meeting. During the meeting, they discussed possible changes and tweaks to the game. This can include changing the rules, replays, officiating, etc. Today the GMs approved a rule change in powerplays for the 2019-2020 season.
According to NHL insider Frank Seravalli of TSN, a coach can decide which circle they can use for a face-off in the beginning of the powerplay. The rule will be set in stone for next season if it passes the NHL’s Board of Governors.
A lot of teams that have an elite winger could use that for their advantage. This will benefit players like Alex Ovechkin, Patrcik Kane, Nikita Kucherov, Leon Draisaitl or Phil Kessel. Teams could use different tactics to use that rule in advantage. They could use top defensemen or face-off specialists to be effective on special teams. This “pick your poison” faceoff should not be a major impact in today’s high-scoring game. But it shows how GMs are willing to tweak the rules to make the game more interesting.
