Turner spent three impact seasons on Alabama’s defense and became a leader. He is now in the 2024 NFL Draft.
As a five-star prospect in the class of 2021, Turner signed with Alabama out of Florida. He saw the field as a freshman, finishing the season with 30 total tackles, 10 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks. His play aided the team in going 13-2 and losing in the National Championship Game. In 2022, he was a key part of the defense with 37 total tackles, eight tackles for loss and four sacks. Alabama won 11 games and won the Sugar Bowl that season. For the 2023 season, Turner totaled 53 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss and 10 sacks. He led the team to a 12-2 season which concluded with a loss to Michigan in the Rose Bowl.
Following the Rose Bowl, Turner declared for the 2024 NFL Draft. He is currently projected to be a top-15 pick.
Dallas Turner Strengths
Turner has a great first step, showing off his burst. He times the snap well and gets a jump on the play with his quickness. This sets him up for success on most plays whether it is against the run or the pass. He has a quick twitch and his ability to get a good start to the play, puts offensive linemen in a panic.
Not only is his first step among the best in the class, he also is a great athlete. His quickness is there, but he also has speed and agility. Bigger offensive tackles have trouble blocking him because they can’t react quickly enough to his speed. He has good flexibility as well, which enables him to bend around the edge as a pass rusher.
At Alabama, Turner was able to play along the defensive line and as an outside linebacker in their 3-4 scheme. He had to help against the run, rush the passer and occasionally drop in coverage. While a 3-4 team could draft him, he has the skill set to fit in with a team that has a 4-3 defense as their base.
Dallas Turner Weaknesses
Turner can add a little bit of strength to his frame. He stands at 6-foot-4 and 252 pounds, which is solid. Turner can be pushed around by bigger tackles. He makes progress with a bull rush, but that has more to do with his ability to convert speed to power and leverage. Adding strength will help him set the edge better against the run.
He needs to show better form tackling at the NFL level. Turner missed tackles on tape with several being plays that he should’ve made. Finishing plays more consistently will make him a more complete player and will help his defense overall.
There were too many penalties on Turner during his college career. Some were on him trying to get a quick first step, but others were much more detrimental, as he picked up some personal fouls. Other plays could’ve been flagged as well and he may not get away with that at the NFL level.
