The Cardinals have activated Jedd Gyorko from the injured list. The move comes ahead of the Cards home opener at Busch Stadium.
In correlation with activating Gyorko, the Redbirds have also optioned utility player Drew Robinson down to Triple-A Memphis. Robinson got three at bats over the road trip and did not reach base, striking out once.
While they did lose their left-handed bench bat by sending Robinson down, by activating Gyorko, the Cardinals have added a lot of power. Jedd has hit 61 homers for the Cards since 2016. This year may finally be the year that the Redbirds can use him off the bench, like they planned to do when they initially acquired him from San Diego.
The timing of his activation couldn’t be better either. Gyorko has killed the NL West, batting a combined .389 against those teams. Much of that success has come against his former team, who the Cards will be up against this weekend. In 17 games against the Padres, Jedd has a .424/.485/.932 slash line with nine home runs and 18 RBI.
Gyorko will not be in the starting lineup for the home opener, but he could make an impact off the bench late in the game.
