When James Vowles became the new team principal at Williams for the 2023 F1 season, he called it, “the opportunity of a lifetime.” At the time, it may have been easy to laugh at this sentiment. Vowels was leaving his role as Motorsport Strategy Director at Mercedes, where he had helped the team win eight constructors championships over 13 seasons. Meanwhile, Williams was dead last on the grid, and had not been a legitimate title contender since the 90’s.
Alas, Vowels desired a new challenge after feeling, “too comfortable,” at Mercedes. And if being too comfortable was something he disliked, he certainly picked the right role.
Vowels took control of a team that had been little more than a motorsport icon that time had moved past. The team had marginal amounts of investment for two decades, leaving the team with facilities severely out of date.
But it wasn’t just the facilities, it was the mindset. What worked all those years ago is not what works today, and Vowles has made it a priority to give the team a clear vision and roadmap for what Williams should look like in the modern era.
Perhaps it’s no coincidence then that 2023 was the best year for Williams since 2017.
The team finished 7th in the team standings, scoring 28 points along the way. And while these results may not seem all that impressive, it doesn’t tell the whole story.
First and foremost, the car had some of the highest upside of the slower teams on the grid. The Williams has always been known for being a rocket in a straight line, but 2023 saw the team finally manage to combine this with improved downforce. This led to some surprising qualifying and race pace for the team.
As for the drivers, there was a significant gap in performance.
Alex Albon, in his fourth F1 season, scored 27 of those 28 points. Meanwhile, his rookie teammate Logan Sargeant scored one point, a 10th place finish at COTA after multiple cars in front of him were disqualified.
That’s not to say Sargeant was completely inept. The American driver ran into some unfortunate luck throughout the season. The most notable occurrence was when a power steering failure crashed him out of the Dutch Grand Prix, a race in which he had shown top 10 pace for much of the weekend. By the tail end of the season, Sargeant was much closer on pace to his teammate Albon than at the start of the season.
All this considered, there is significant room for improvement at Williams heading into 2024. James Vowles preached the importance of a long-term plan, rather than focusing on short-term gains. Nonetheless, the team has seen short term gains while still maintaining its roadmap for the future.
Albon will be back. Sergeant will be back. And while there’s no guarantee that Williams will breakout in 2024, they do have something that the team has been lacking for years.

James Vowles clearly has the ship steered in the right direction after years of being lost. Seeing how this iconic F1 team continues to grow will be one of the most interesting storylines heading into 2024.
