Wyndham Clark wins the U.S. Open and becomes a star in Los Angeles. Clark missed the cut at the two U.S. Opens prior to this year. Despite having a difficult history with the tournament, he capitalized on his third start and secured the first major title of his career.
Completely surrounded by a sea of fans on the eighteenth green, Wyndham Clark needed a two-putt or better to win. With his family nervously looking on, Clark drained his second putt and won the 2023 U.S. Open. After carding a 10-under 270, Clark earned a $3.6 million share of the purse.
The USGA shared Clark’s life-changing moment on Twitter.
Los Angeles Country Club played tough during the final round of the tournament. Rory McIlroy battled hard as he searched for his first major title since 2014. Although McIlroy put together a solid outing on Sunday, he fell by one stroke to Wyndham Clark. Scottie Scheffler finished the tournament in solo third place at 7-under 273.
Tournament Recap
The U.S. Open is a tournament that is notorious for being one of the most difficult events on the PGA Tour. This year, many players got the best of Los Angeles Country Club. The course conceded three aces on the fifteenth hole thanks to the efforts of Matt Fitzpatrick, Sam Burns and Matthieu Pavon.
In 1973 Johnny Miller set the record for the lowest round in U.S. Open history after shooting a 63. This year, Rickie Fowler and Xander Shauffele added their names to the record book after carding a 62 during the first round of the tournament.
Despite dropping the lead during the final round and falling to T5, Rickie Fowler put on a show. Fowler set a new U.S. Open record after he recorded 18 birdies through the first 36 holes in Los Angeles.
During the latest U.S. Open, the sixth and eighth holes played the easiest. They surrendered 168 and 206 birdies to the field respectively. Hole 17 featured a par-4 that gave players fits all week long. Despite many great efforts, the seventeenth gave up just 25 birdies.
When is the next tournament?
The next tournament on the PGA Tour is the Travelers Championship. This event will be played at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, CT. The Travelers Championship will feature another record-breaking $20 million purse.
Xander Shauffele won the tournament last year and is looking to defend his title at the 6,841-yard par-70 track. Shauffele carded an impressive 19-under 261. J.T. Poston and Sahith Theegala tied for second after carding a 17-under 263.
