Ranking the Best Tank Heroes in Overwatch’s Latest Patch

Publish Date: March 14, 2020

Overwatch’s latest patch (1.46) has shaken up the meta for heroes in each of the three roles, which affects heroes all across the game. For example, the nerfs to several of the different DPS heroes in the game have greatly affected which Tanks and Supports are viable as a result. Because each change in this patch affects so many different heroes, we have broken down which are currently the best in their role. Hopefully, this more detailed guide of each role can help players better operate in the current meta and win more games. For a more general look at all the heroes in the game, be sure to check out our March 2020 Overwatch Tier List.

The Best Tank Hero

Reinhardt

After a series of tough nerfs to shields and other heroes using barriers, Reinhardt stands alone as the most reliable main tank in Overwatch at the moment. He is resistant to Lucio boops, who has also become a strong pick lately, and his ability to brawl fits in with the current meta playstyle. Most compositions in professional play have featured Reinhardt next to a D.Va, another hero who is currently in contention with Reinhardt for most usable currently. Look to both of these to counter most of the strong DPS and Support heroes.

Other top Tanks

D.Va
Orisa
Sigma
Wrecking Ball
Winston

There are more tanks in this section because, frankly, most every tank is strong in the present meta. One could argue it is the most overpowered role in the game right now, making it hard to say very many options are poor ones. This is true because there are two options in the meta for tanks: barriers and dive. For barrier tanks, Reinhardt is a near must-pick and both Orisa and Sigma are viable options depending on the map type. The same can be said for D.Va. Dive tanks, as it stands, favors D.Va as well, with both Wrecking Ball and Winston remaining viable as second options in more mobile compositions.

Sub-Optimal Options

Zarya
Roadhog

These two heroes are not bad at the moment, just not as dominant as others currently in the meta. Roadhog can still find utility in bunker compositions or alongside Orisa and Zarya can still be useful alongside a Reinhardt. However, the meta currently favors tanks with more to offer than these two, making them the least favorable options at tank in Patch 1.44.

Overall, there are still situations in which each of these supports can be played, this list is simply meant to rank how they fair in the current meta. Keep in mind that this is based across all skill ranges, attempting to consolidate one list all players could operate off of.
