The last few pieces of the 2021 NYXL puzzle are finally in place. On Wednesday December 23, the New York Excelsior announced their coaching staff for the upcoming 2021 season. The Excelsior will be lead by newly promoted Head Coach Ju-hyeop “WhyNot” Lee. Joining him will be Assistant coach Geon-yong “Sqix” Kim, Player Manager Minseong “Unknown” Kim, General Manager Yohan “Nugget” Kim, and Yong-cheol “imt” Jeong transitioning to Head of Data.
They’re ever-present and relentlessly dedicated behind the scenes: please give a warm welcome to our coaching staff for the 2021 season.

The new coaching staff marks back to back years that New York is going in a new direction at the coaching position. Though unlike other teams looking for a spark, the Excelsior kept multiple coaches from the previous year. WhyNot and imt have swapped roles, with the hope that under the leadership of WhyNot, New York can succeed with a heavy rookie lineup.
WhyNot won’t be the only coach with extensive experience. Joining the Excelsior is former London Spitfire coach Sqix. With the Spitfire Sqix couldn’t quite find sustained success with a similar rookie heavy roster. Now with a more seasoned roster, it will be worth watching to see how this young coach can bounce back after a disappointing season.

New General Manager nuGget formerly worked with the Seoul Dynasty back in Season 1 of the Overwatch League. Paired up with new Player Manager Unknown, it will be up to these two to build the environment for New York this season. The impact of a manager is incredibly important in the Overwatch League. It is up to these two to be the support line for the coaching staff.
