New Jersey Devils Acquire: Washington Capitals Acquire:
Jonas Siegenthaler 2021 Conditional 3rd round pick*
*Conditions: Arizona’s draft pick is currently listed as conditional between Arizona and New Jersey. If the pick is not transferred to New Jersey, the 3rd round pick will be changed to New Jerseys 2021 3rd round pick instead of Arizona’s
The Devils add some youth to their blueline by trading for Jonas Siegenthaler who hasn’t played much in Washington. A change of scenery was needed for Siegenthaler and he could develop well in New Jersey alongside former teammate and fellow Swiss Nico Hischier.
Detroit Red Wings Acquire: Montreal Canadiens Acquire:
Hayden Verbeek Jon Merrill
2021 5th round pick
The Canadiens added depth defensemen Jon Merrill for a very cheap price. Merrill has been a solid defensemen on the struggling Detroit Red Wings. For the Canadiens, Merrill will slot in on their bottom pair, replacing defensemen Victor Mete who was recently waived.
Columbus Blue Jackets Acquire: San Jose Sharks Acquire: Toronto Maple Leafs Acquire:
2021 1st round pick 2021 4th round pick Nick Foligno ($1,375,000)
2022 4th round pick Retaining ($2,750,000) Stefan Noesen
The Maple Leafs are loading up, acquiring Nick Foligno for a 1st and 4th round pick. Even though the Leafs overpaid for Foligno, he would add excellent leadership and a great two-way game for the Maple Leafs.
Calgary Flames Acquire: Toronto Maple Leafs Acquire:
2022 3rd round pick David Rittich ($1,375,000)
With Frederick Andersen on LTIR, the Maple Leafs add a backup goalie in David Rittich for a fair price. Now the Maple Leafs will be rocking with a tandem of Jack Campbell and David Rittich for the rest of the season.
New York Islanders Acquire: Ottawa Senators Acquire:
Braydon Coburn 2022 7th round pick
The Islanders add veteran defensemen Braydon Coburn for practically nothing. Coburn would add much needed depth to the Islanders defensive core.
Boston Bruins Acquire: Ottawa Senators Acquire:
Mike Rielly 2022 3rd round pick
The Bruins add defensemen Mike Relly for a fair price of a 3rd round pick. With the amount of injuries the Bruins have sustained on their defense, this trade makes sense for both sides involved.
April 12, 2021
Los Angeles Kings Acquire: Pittsburgh Penguins Acquire
2022 conditional 3rd round pick* Jeff Carter ($2,636,363)
2023 conditional 4th round pick**
*Conditions: The 2022 3rd round pick can upgrade to a 2nd round pick if the Penguins reach the 2020-21 Stanley Cup Final and Carter plays in at least 50% of the games.
**Conditions: The 2023 4th round pick can upgrade to a 3rd round pick if Carter plays in at least 50 games during the 2021-22 season
Veteran center Jeff Carter was traded from the LA Kings to the Pittsburgh Penguins in a deal that many didn’t see coming. The Penguins are another team that is facing many injuries and having a solid player like Carter would work as a solution to the problem.
Boston Bruins Acquire: Buffalo Sabres Acquire:
Taylor Hall ($4,000,000) Anders Bjork
Curtis Lazar 2021 2nd round pick
Former Hart Trophy Winner Taylor Hall was shipped to Boston in a pretty disappointing trade for the Sabres. Despite Hall having an underwhelming season, the Sabres could have gotten better offers and sold high on Hall. This trade is looking like a steal for the Bruins.
Chicago Blackhawks Acquire: Vancouver Canucks Acquire:
Adam Guadette Matthew Highmore
This interesting swap is between two young and struggling players. Highmore hasn’t produced much at the NHL level and is looking like a future bottom 6 winger. Guadette has solid potential, but hasn’t lived up to expectations in Vancouver. This trade favours the Canucks.
New Jersey Devils Acquire: Edmonton Oilers Acquire:
2022 Conditional 4th round pick Dmitry Kulikov
*Conditions: The 2022 4th round pick will upgrade to a 2022 3rd round pick if the Oilers win a playoff round in the 2020-21 Stanley Cup playoffs
The Oilers add Dmirty Kulikov who has been solid for the Devils this year. Kulikov is a very steady stay at home defensemen who would fit well on the Oilers defense next to offensive-minded defensemen Tyson Barrie.
Tampa Bay Lightning Acquire: San Jose Sharks Acquire:
Fredrick Claesson Magnus Chrona
The Lightning add Fredrick Clasesson who is just added depth for their playoff push. In return, the Sharks get Magnus Chrona who is a young goalie prospect. This small trade helps both teams.
Chicago Blackhawks Acquire: Colorado Avalanche Acquire:
Josh Dickinson Carl Soderberg
Ryder Rolston
Forward Carl Soderberg returns back to Colorado from Chicago in exchange for two prospects. This trade makes sense from both teams as the Avalanche are going on a cup run while the Blackhawks were looking to sell pending UFAs.
Calgary Flames Acquire: Florida Panthers Acquire:
Emil Heineman Sam Bennett
2022 2nd round pick 2022 6th round pick
The Flames ship off former 4th overall pick, Sam Bennett to the Florida Panthers. Bennett has definitely not lived up to his expectations in Calgary and was looking for a change of scenery. Bennett is known as a good playoff contributor but the Panthers definitely way overpaid in this trade.
Chicago Blackhawks Acquire: San Jose Sharks Acquire: Vegas Golden Knights Acquire:
2021 2nd round pick 2022 5th round pick Mattias Janmark ($1,250,000)
2022 3rd round pick Retaining ($1,125,000) Nick DeSimone
Another 3-way trade happened as the Golden Knights got Mattias Janmark for a 2nd and 3rd round pick. Even though the Knights desperately needed a center, they slightly overpaid for Janmark.
Chicago Blackhawks Acquire: Vancouver Canucks Acquire:
2021 4th round pick Madison Bowey
2021 5th round pick
Youngish defensemen Madison Bowey gets a change of scenery, going from the Blackhawks to the Canucks. Bowey had a lot of potential going into his NHL career, but hasn’t panned out. He’s looking for a new start in Vancouver.
Detroit Red Wings Acquire: Washington Capitals Acquire:
Richard Panik Anthony Mantha
Jakub Vrana
2021 1st round pick
2022 2nd round pick
The biggest move of the deadline was the Red Wings robbing the Capitals in a blockbuster trade. The Red Wings sent Anthony Mantha to the Capitals in exchange for Jakub Vrana, who isn’t much worse than Mantha, Richard Panik, who is there for the salary, along with a 1st and 2nd round pick. This is a big win for the Red Wings.
Anaheim Ducks Acquire: Toronto Maple Leafs Acquire:
2022 5th round pick Ben Hutton
The Maple Leafs add to their defense by trading for depth defensive Ben Hutton from the Ducks. Hutton could slide into the bottom pair or would be added depth for the playoffs in case of injuries.
Montreal Canadiens Acquire: Philadelphia Flyers Acquire:
Erik Gustafsson ($1,500,000) 2022 7th round pick
The Canadiens get yet another depth defensemen, this time Erik Gustafsson from the Flyers for almost nothing. Gustafsson is a very offensive defenseman and could do well on the Canadiens blue line that could use a offensive defenseman.
Anaheim Ducks Acquire: Carolina Hurricanes Acquire:
Haydn Fleury Jani Hakanpaa
2022 6th round pick
The Ducks stole young defensemen Haydn Fleury from the Hurricanes for a 6th and Hakanpaa. Fleury hasn’t had the chance to shine in Carolina, but has the potential and chance to do so on the Ducks. In return, the Hurricanes get Hakanapaa who is a decent depth defensemen and a pick.
Nashville Predators Acquire: Ottawa Senators Acquire:
Erik Gubranson Brandon Fortunato
2023 7th round pick
The Nashville Predators add defenseman Erik Gubranson for basically nothing. Gudbranson isn’t anything special, just a depth defenemsen the Predators could use in case of injuries.
Philadelphia Flyers Acquire: Washington Capitals Acquire:
2021 5th round pick Michael Raffl ($400,000)
The Capitals add Michael Raffl who is a depth forward that they got for a very reasonable price. Raffl would take over Richard Panik’s bottom six spot, who was just traded to the Red Wings earlier today.
Vancouver Canucks Acquire: Winnipeg Jets Acquire:
2021 6th round pick Jordie Benn
Many people expected the Jets to go big during the trade deadline, however, they only made one small move in acquiring Jordie Benn from the Canucks. This trade seems fair for both sides but the Jets could have done so much more at the deadline.
