Peterson will fill in for Henry, who is expected to be out at least eight weeks. Henry suffered the injury on Sunday against the Colts.
After playing in 2020 with the Lions, Peterson has not played in 2021. The expectation is that he will sign to the practice squad and will be elevated to the active roster once he is ready for game action.
The 36-year-old Peterson has rushed for 14,820 yards and 118 touchdowns in his career. He currently ranks fifth on the all-time rushing yards list and 12th on the all-time touchdowns list. Peterson has made seven Pro Bowls, three All-Pro teams and was the MVP of the NFL in 2012.
