The Saints have hired their next head coach. Former defensive coordinator Dennis Allen has been hired as New Orleans’ head coach after the retirement of Super Bowl-winning coach Sean Payton.
The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the news via Twitter on Monday.
#Saints DC Dennis Allen was the top choice going in and despite strong interviews from Aaron Glenn, Eric Bieniemy and Brian Flores, he lands the #Saints job. A second chance at a HC job.

Allen was previously a head coach with the Raiders, back when they resided in Oakland. He held the position from 2012-2014, going 8-28 in that time. He was fired four games into the 2014 season after posting an 0-4 record.
This is his second stint with the Saints, as he held multiple positions with the team from 2006-2010, winning a Super Bowl with New Orleans. He was then named the Broncos’ defensive coordinator for one year before being poached by Oakland. Allen will now have a second shot at a head coaching tenure after a miserable first go-around.
