Ward was an under-the-radar recruit who started his career at Incarnate Word of the FCS level. He played two seasons at Incarnate Word, earning FCS Second Team All-American honors in 2021. Ward then made the move to Washington State for the 2022 and 2023 seasons. In 2022, he passed for 3,232 yards, 23 touchdowns and nine interceptions on 64.4 percent completion. His play helped the Cougars go 7-6 on the season. For the 2023 season, Ward passed for 3,736 yards, 25 touchdowns and seven interceptions on 66.6 percent completion. Washington State didn’t make a bowl game following the 2023 season and Ward transferred to Miami for 2024. Ward passed for 4,313 yards, 39 touchdowns and seven interceptions on 67.2 percent completion. He led Miami to a 10-win season.
Ward played a half of Miami’s bowl game before sitting out for the second half. He is now in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Ward has very good arm talent for the NFL level. His arm is strong and he has no hesitations about fitting balls into tight windows or pushing it downfield. He is able to throw on he run with ease and generates so much power from his upper body, that his feet don’t have to be planted to get a throw off with some velocity on it.
His athleticism is great for the quarterback position. He can do designed runs to pick up yards. What is more impressive is his ability to scramble. He keeps his eyes downfield to create big plays downfield on broken plays. If there aren’t receivers open, he is able to run for himself and pick up key yards to help the team.
He has solid accuracy that extends to all three levels of the field. Ward is able to get the ball out quickly on short throws, placing the ball well to give receivers room to run after the catch. He can fit the ball into tight windows at the second level. While he doesn’t hit every deep ball, he does so enough to be effective.
Ward really needs to work on his decision-making. He makes plenty of throws that are up for grabs for defenders. A lot of this comes from faith in his arm, but in the NFL, he could be turnover-prone because of his inclination to keep plays alive and throw the ball even when there isn’t a receiver with much separation. Teaching him to take the easy yards and not to force things will take some time.
While he can escape pressure because of his mobility, Ward doesn’t always handle pressure well. There are times when he doesn’t feel it coming. Other times he does see it coming, but then can make throws that are off-target or are bad decisions as a result of the pressure. Playing more composed in situations where defenses bring pressure will make him a better player.
He is capable of going through progressions, but there are plenty of times he can lock in on his first receiver. In these instances, he will stare down his receiver and throw it, giving the defense time to react. His ability to read the defense pre-snap is great, but he can trust things too much and put the ball in harm’s way.
