Now that the season is over for the Philadelphia Eagles, it is time to look at how the Eagles fared with their 2021 draft picks. Who turned out to be a steal? Who underperformed in their first season in the NFL? This article will be reviewing the Philadelphia Eagles’ 2021 Draft Class: Rounds 1-3.
Round 1
10th overall pick: Devonta Smith, WR, Alabama
Devonta Smith has been great this year and was he was fully worth that first pick. Smith is great route runner and has a lot of speed. Smith always seems to find ways to get open and find ways to make that big play. He needed very little time to adjust in the NFL, which is not an easy feat. He dropped a couple of passes in his first game or two and then he found his rhythm; He was on for the rest of the season.
Smith was close to having a 1,000 season but came up just short with 916 receiving yards. He averaged 14.3 yards a reception and had five touchdowns throughout the season. He was easily the Eagles best wide receiver. Smith broke the franchise record Desean Jackson held, which was the most receiving yards for a rookie in Philadelphia uniform. Smith should get even better next year. Expect him to break through the 1,000 receiving threshold and score more touchdowns. Devonta Smith was everything but a bust in his rookie season in the NFL.
Round 2
37th overall pick: Landon Dickerson, C, Alabama
There were questions about Dickerson going into the 2021 NFL season. He tore his ACL in the SEC Championship game and people wondered if his injury would affect him going into the NFL. He got some playing time in Week 2 of the regular season and made his starting debut against the Cowboys in Week 3.
Dickerson is big, as he is 6’6 and weighs 333 pounds. He has a lot of strength and knows how to block defenders whether its protecting Jalen Hurts or making room for the running backs. Dickerson really controlled that offensive line along with Jordan Mailata. He was huge reason as to why the Eagles had such a good rushing attack. Dickerson has proven that the injury has not limited him in anyway and he will be great starter in the NFL.
Round 3
73rd overall pick: Milton Williams, DE, Louisiana Tech
Milton Williams played college ball at Louisiana Tech, where he had success. He was ranked third in Conference USA in tackles for losses, as he had 10 in 2020. Williams also ranked seventh in sacks in Conference USA with four and a half sacks in 2020. This seemed to be a sign of things to come as he had a very good rookie year in the NFL. He has played in most of the Eagles games in 2021, but only started two games for the Eagles.
He racked up 30 total tackles and got two sacks during the season. Williams also had six tackles for losses this season which was what was advertised coming out college. The reason he can do this is because Williams is fast getting off the line of scrimmage and he uses his hands well, which can allow him to get past defenders. Williams like the other two players on this list will only get better with experience, and that is scary because all these players had good rookie campaigns for the Eagles.
This concludes reviewing the Philadelphia Eagles 2021 Draft Class: Rounds 1-3. Be on the lookout for rounds 4-7 later in the week.
